Hi guys,

I've noticed that 168005 still has 4 coaches but that one of those coaches is from 168003 (one of the end two). To add to this, the cab numbers have 168005 on one end and 168005 on the other. Does anyone know the reason for this?

Cheers,

FQ.

The other Driving cab vehicles are stopped for repairs.

And, to keep availability high, it's better in the long term to mish-mash sets together rather than consigning them in whole to the shed.

At least they're from the same class, rather than some of the more "interesting" hybrids BR used to create.....

Those hybrids still happen, I'm fairly sure. Class 153s are a common one.

This unit was in this hybrid formation when I saw it at Oxford in early January, with different unit numbers on the leading cab depending upon which direction the unit is going. I do not know how long prior to January that this hybrid was formed.

I don't think we've seen a hybrid with a 153 for a long time now ever since GWR created 153399. Their practice now is to use any good 150 vehicle without a partner to form a 3 Car Set such as 150938 at the moment.

There's been a 168 (003?) parked up in the sidings adjacent to platform 1 at Aylesbury for over five weeks now. It has windscreen damage and according to one of the friendly Chiltern staff I was chatting to, there are no spare screens that fit these units available. Apparently a new glass is having to be manufactured in France and the unit is likely to be out of traffic until May…

Happens in every industry. You do your best to manage spare stock levels based on historic use whilst balancing re-orders to meet minimum order levels from the manufacturer and economic storage...

Then you get a spate of damage.

I think in total there are 10 driving vehicles of those 168/0 units that are of the original Turbostar variant before the final cab design came into service for future models. I think the Midland Mainline 170s been the first in the late 90s. So in reality it's a unique windscreen so been out until May doesn't seem unrealistic with a specialist glass having to be manufactured in France, Saint-Gobain I think produces Bombardier Glass.

Bear in mind the 168 and the subsequent turbostar/electrostar fleet is essentially a networker update.

Cant comment for bombardier but Saint Gobain certainly manufacture the desiro fleet windscreens

Are the windscreens not similar to those of the Networkers/Turbos?

And here is the problem with small fleets. I presume the same would apply if say a class 180 lost a windscreen
