This is astrange question / observation.

Internally at the doors on a 165 they have 2 buttons next to the door. One to open the door and one to close it.

On both gwr and chilterns 165 sometimes the open button is the top one of the two buttons (with the close being at the bottom) and sometimes the open is the bottom of the 2 buttons (with close being the top button)

Anyone know why they're not all uniform?

I am pretty sure all of them have open on the bottom, close on top. Certainly is the case with all the ones I’ve been on.

The original layout was open on the top, close on the bottom on pretty much all trains. They've been swapped at refurb on most trains so as to ensure the open is low enough down for a wheelchair user to use. Perhaps the OP is remembering the way they used to be?
