Unfortunately, Maps has stopped.
Afternoon folks. Booked on spare today but ended up doing a Euston and back.
On the back bit, I saw what was either a 165 or a 166 on the Up Slow in the Leighton Buzzard area.
Anyone know what and why?? I'm assuming it was on it's way back to the WR from Wolverton??

This one: 5V65 http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/P93170/2015/02/14/advanced

In the opposite direction was 5M65: http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/P93153/2015/02/14/advanced

No mention of stock on either working.

That be the one. It was either a class 165 or 166, like I said. Out of interest, how the hell do FGW get route and traction knowledge in place for workings like that?

It won't be that long until these workings cease.

They'll soon be scuttling along the E-W link.

Conducting an FGW driver who knows the traction?

It's a pity Southern's Redhill drivers, who are qualified on 165/166 stock, don't sign the WLL/WCML from Clapham Junction like some other depots do, or they could be hired to take it from the GWML at least as far as Milton Keynes Central.

That is, if they actually had enough drivers to go round!

GBRf often do moves like this with their own drivers who sign the route and traction.

ISTR Freightliner having also been connected with unit moves for overhaul/refurb, and DCR reported to have done ECS moves of GC stock to/from crewe

So how would a GBRf driver sign the traction?? It's not like he's gonna get much of an opportunity to refresh them.

They had a training course like everyone else who signs them, then, so long as they drive them atleast once every six months or so, they can continue to sign them.

Unless something has changed recently, the 165s and 166s have been regular visitors to Ilford's wheel lathe for many years, so probably more opportunities than might first appear for freight drivers to work this stock and keep traction knowledge up to date.

Some currently being refurbished at Ilford EMUD. Think it was a Chiltern one I last saw there.
