16+ Zip Oyster photocard

Hi all
My daughter has an 11-15 zip card which expires end of sept 26. I want to apply for a 16+ card but cannot at present. TFL web says something like existing card already valid. Is there an overlap period when I can apply or do I have to wait until the existing ones has actually expired?
