My daughter is turning 16 soon, and I'm fairly sure I understand this correctly - but just to make sure!
The family & friends railcard pages state:
That seems fairly clear: even though a 16-year-old normally can't travel on child tickets, she can provided the tickets were purchased on a family & friends railcard which was itself purchased before she turned 16 (and is travelling with one of the adults on the F&F railcard, of course). Which also means if I have a 1 year F&F railcard expiring soon-ish after her 16th birthday, it's to my advantage to buy another one just before she turns 16, in order to extend the period during which we can travel on the F&F until she's nearly 17.
But if she does travel on her own, she can't use child tickets (and would probably want a 16-17 railcard if she was doing so regularly).
