Have just come back from a 16 day Interail First Class Global Pass trip, which saw me travel to and through, France-Belgium-Holland-Germany-Austria-Slovakia-Croatia-Slovenia-Hungary-Italy-Denmark-Sweden-Norway. The main places I visited and stayed a day at were Split-Budapest and Tromso, while rest of trip was just one night at Zagreb-Oslo-Bergen-Narvik. Reason for this was wanted to see much as Europe again as possible in just over 2 weeks i had available to me to do trip in. Last year did 22 day trip around Europe, which saw me visit and pass through Poland-Italy-Germany-Denmark-Sweden-Switzerland-France-Belgium with a slower paced itenary and spending several days in some of the countries.
On this trip I got to see some stunning and beautiful scenery and ride various type of trains, which will list below:
OBB Night Jet New Generation in the Mini Cabins, and Next Generation Rail Jet in Business class, which was interesting to try out, and in my opinion the OBB Next Generation stock is again very good quality and have some of the best stock in Europe,
DB ICE, nice trains to ride on and very nice interiors in First Class,
Split-Zagreb was beautiful scenery and very rural with no big towns all the way from split to Zagreb, and proper loco hauled stock with drop down windows, and an old diesel loco which seemed to keep over heating etc, as it kept stopping after some of the climbs, just wonderful way to travel.
Zagreb-Graz was another beautiful scenery trip running along side a river in a valley, on 2 coach loco hauled stock with an electric loco, again with drop down windows and compartments, wonderful way to travel again.
Swedish X2000, nice interiors in First class and fun to ride tilting train in Europe,
Oslo-Bergen stunning scenery and well worth the journey, great way to see Norway at its best,
Narvik-Stockholm, used Daytime train and sleeper train, proper loco hauled stock and electric loco, and stunning scenery, again another wonderful way to travel,
Stockholm-Hamburg, was a nice mixture of X2000 and loco hauled stock, with some fast running, pleasant journey,
Frankfurt-Paris, a good Double Deck TGV blast at 200mph, nice way to head home And always good to have high speed blast.
I went to Tromso as well, as it looked a beautiful place and area to visit, and great place to see the Northern Lights, So as it wasn’t practical to get a train to Bodo or Narvik from Bergen, I took a Wideroe Jet plane from Bergen to Tromso, and then booked an unlimited mileage Northern Lights chasing tour, with result that we had an hour long Northern Lights display above our heads, which was phenomenal, then did a beautiful Fjord scenic cruse, then did 4 hour coach to Narvik which was beautiful scenery. So overall an amazing trip and bettered last years trip.
