16-25 Railcard

Wondering if anyone can help...

I had a 16-25 railcard and bought a saver return ticket, without realising it has run out between the outward and return journeys. I'm now too old to buy another railcard.

Is my ticket still valid?

No.

Tickets AND Railcards must be valid for BOTH parts of the journey.

No, the railcard must be in date and valid for BOTH journeys on a return ticket. You should change your ticket before you make the journey. If you attempt the return journey and the guard see the out of date railcard you will, at the very least, be charged for a new ticket.

If you go to the ticket office before making the return trip, reckon that you should be able to excess up to what the price of a "Saver" (Off-Peak) return would have been without the railcard discount.

If you get gripped on the train, you will almost certainly have to pay the full standard fare, which will undoubtedly be a lot more than a "Saver" return.

P.S. Depending on when you are travelling, don't forget also that with certain TOCs (such as Virgin) the arrangement you may previously have enjoyed, by which 16-25 Railcard holders can travel on peak trains with a (16-25 railcard discounted) "Saver" (Off-Peak) ticket will no longer apply, now that you no longer have a valid 16-25 Railcard.

Both portions of your ticket will have to be changed, if you do this before you travel, you will either be re-issued with a discounted single to go and a non-discounted single to come back, or a non-discounted return, whichever is cheaper.

If you travel with the discounted ticket and are charged a full standard single on the return journey, you can have the discounted return portion refunded, but not the full standard single, in effect you have a single each way, one discounted and one full standard single, this will not be the cheapest option in most cases.

Just say you forgot your railcard

ive bought tickets before without realising I hadn't got my railcard

just went straight to the desk and got it excessed for 0.65p

simple and you won't get in trouble

4. What happens if I have my 26th birthday before my Railcard runs out?

You can buy or renew your 1-year 16-25 Railcard up to and including the day before your 26th birthday, and your 3-year Railcard up until the day before your 24th birthday and keep using it until its expiry date. So, even if you turn 26 during the validity of your Railcard you can still make huge savings.

So yes, you can!

Yes! I've already got that day marked on the calender (as it is June!) Pity poor planning saw me renew in January, really, but I can take the ~£15 worth of hit in the savings I rack up easily- though most of my journeys are within the Network Railcard area, so subsequent won't be too bad.

If you save more than the cost of your railcard (that you wouldn't save with another railcard) between January and June, it is worth buying a new one the day before your 26th birthday.

The same theory applies with Family and Friends railcards, in regard to children. Any person age 15 or under when the railcard is bought, counts as a child when buying tickets with the railcard.
