I've got a 16-25 Railcard, bought online, that expires on 5th November. I turn 26 on 27th October.

My plan had been to go to the station on the 26th and buy a new Railcard, but out of curiosity I logged into my account and it's letting me renew my existing card. Even when I go back through the skipped pages to change my employment status to "Full time employed" (from "FT Student"), I can still proceed.

As I understand, renewing normally means you're sent a card that starts the day after the current one expires - so in my case 6th November. But by then, I'm already 26.

Is this a glitch, a loophole or totally legitimate?

I've just bought a YP railcard for the same reason, ordered on the 7th, arrived yesterday with expiry date of 13th October and my birthday is today (10th), so there's some leeway in expiry dates when buying online.

I don't think it matters that much to them, since renewal is only normally permitted no more than a short length of time (a month perhaps?) before your current one expires AFAIK.

So the maximum you would gain is about a month and in the grand scheme of things matters very little to them I suspect.
