16-25 R/Card

Hi.

I turn 16 on tuesday, and unlike my peers I intend to pay adult fares. I want to get the 16-25 RCD but trying to do so online asks for a passport, which I don't have. So I have a few questions:

1. Can I get it from a staffed station?
2. Will I need a passport when getting it from a staffed station or will a birth certificate suffice?
3. Will they issue me a temporary card so I can start using the YP discount straight away?

Oh and btw, YP RCD and 16-25 are the same thing, right? :P

You need your birth certificate if buying at a station or some other form of proof of age. You will get the full railcard there and then. Most staffed stations can sell you the ticket. The railcard is subject to a £12 minimum fare before 10am midweek from next week, i.e. not worth using it if the fare is less than £12.

Also, can I get an adult photocard without buying a season ticket?

And I can use it before 10am Monday to Friday if my fare is £12+ and I can use it for any fare amount after 10am, Saturdays and Sundays and Public holidays, is this correct?

2. Yes. Acceptable forms of ID are birth certificate, passport, driving licence, International Student Identity Card (ISIC) or NUS cards featuring the ISIC logo
3. No, you will be issued with the actual railcard there and then. You need to bring a passport size photo.

Note that station railcards cost more than those bought online. You can also use a driving license as ID for online.

They are able to issue a permanent railcard, as long as you take a passport sized photo to the office with your application form.

Yes, the former name the the 16 - 25 railcard was Young Persons, some still refer to it as such and the discount mark on tickets is still Y - P, this prints in the same place as the white on black background 'CHILD' which you currently get.

Make sure to buy yourself one final child ticket before then - something to have as a keepsake in years to come!

And yes, Y-P is the same thing as 16-25; 16-25 Railcard is just the newest name for it. The systems are still outdated and I guess ATOC can't be bothered with the costs of updating the Y-P designation.

I'm sure it's £28. It's just that online you can usually take advantage of various web-only discounts. Assuming you have a driving licence next year (or even a passport) you should be able to get your second one online.

No. Why would you need one? It won't be accepted as proof of age anywhere!

Don't forget the minimum fare does not apply in July or August and off peak tickets with railcard discounts are valid on Virgin at any time as long as the ticket is priced by Virgin and the route is not Virgin Only, I think.

It's just really for a souvenir and my local odeon do accept it. So will I be able to get this season ticket from say Ashford International? (i.e. a station which isn't in the season ticket) and will I get a photocard with a seven day season?

Yes. Ashford can sell that season, with a photocard. You need to take a picture with you. I can mail you one for free if you want. PM me.

Ryde Esplanade (RYD) to Ryde St Johns Road (RYR) - 7 day season, £3.50.

There is no reason why you can't get a season photocard without a season, but I do not see the benefit of this as it does not mention age or date of birth on it. It is literally just a photo on a piece of card with a written name on it and can't be used for the railcard either.

You can use the railcard for fares over £12 at any time, however the fare cannot go below £12 if you travel before 10am Monday to Friday (Sept-June inclusive) only. Weekends, Bank Holidays and throughout July and August it can be used without the minimum fare at any time.

If you get a railcard, the photocard has your date of birth on! So you could just use that... or is there something I'm missing that is making everyone look for cheap season tickets? :P

It's not official ID though, anybody could forge a railcard!

There's no such thing as official ID. Up to the individual organisation what to accept.

And all forms of identification can be forged.
