16-25 Minimum Fare and Travelcards

Hello all,

Just a quick question. I've bought a few tickets at Guildford Station TVMs this morning - one of which is a Boxhill & Westhumble to London Travelcard (Southern only).

Its supposed to be £11.85 - but instead the TVM has charged the £12 minimum fare, despite there being an easement in July/August for this.

I'm well aware it's only 15p on this occasion so I'm not exactly bothered (though TOCs have tried to prosecute over less!) but do the minimum fare rules apply to Travelcards or is this just a naff TVM? My Guildford to Boxhill single was correctly discounted.

I wonder whether it's actually because the % discount for a 16-25 Railcard has been very slightly reduced, and with some sort of rounding, the fare has become £12, rather than it applying a £12 minimum fare (which would be incorrect today, as you say)

Did the TVM warn you about the minimum fare?

I'm not sure it's that (or rather, it shouldn't be that!), for a ticket purchased today for travel today.

I wasn't warned of anything - and the ticket does say DISC: MIN.

Simple error then - I'd feed that back to the TOC if I were you.

Very strange though, as obviously the machine date must be correct, so it knows it is August!

I might be misremembering but isn’t there a minimum fare for a Travelcard?

Just checked and the minimum railcard discounted off peak Travelcard fare is £10.40, so it isn’t this…

What do the Outward Journey 'time restrictions' for this fare in BR Fares indicate? Anything, or nothing, to do with the £12 minimum fare that was reportedly charged?

So it appears as if the minimum fare restriction has been keenly applied too early in the data, if I'm reading that correctly?

This would be a bug on two counts, because anyone charging £12 with the suggested new discount would also have gotten the (very simple) rounding rules wrong. Never say never, but I think something minimum fare related is more likely.

I think it would need poking the data properly. BRFares will cap the start date at today if I recall correctly which makes this a bit more annoying to interpret
