I was on a train from Southampton Airport Parkway to Waterloo last night. As we stopped at Basingstoke (might have been Woking), a train made up of two 159s pulled in, with the boards showing it as a Brockenhurst service. Which given the engineering works this weekend wasn't unexpected, but to see 159s instead of a 444 or 450 was.

I know the Lymington service is run by a 159 during the week, so I was wondering if it was going to work down to Brock from Waterloo, then sit at Brock overnight and form the Lymington service in the morning. And if so, given that service is run by one 159, what happens to the other train? Back to Eastleigh?

(I was under the impression that the Lymington shuttle goes off to Eastleigh over the weekend to be refuelled and/or replaced with a different set.)

Or, was it just a one-off caused by the engineering works further down the Weymouth mainline this weekend - using a pair of 159s because they were available, or something like that?

Trains run through Basingstoke (or Woking) worked by 2X159s between Exeter and Waterloo which you would have seen. If you were not clear at which station you were at, how could you be sure it said Brockenhurst on the display and alluding to that particular train.
The Lymington Branch is worked by a 158 and not a 159 and at weekends goes to it's Home Depot, i.e. Salisbury. Runs to and from Bournemouth at night during the week.

Waterloo - Exeter services were running via Southampton Central last night as there was a planned closure Basingstoke to Salisbury.

Perhaps the announced calling pattern, which would have included Southampton, Millbrook and Redbridge, led to some misreading...

PHILIPE - My train was stationary at the platform, right next to the DMIs. I thought it was unusual to see Brock as the destination for a train, but figured that it was due to the engineering works going on that night. My bad about the 158/159, I rarely see it as the fast Weymouth service I travel on in the evening tends not to coincide with the Lymington train being at Brock.
