I've been stopping at a station before where I've lost interlock in the last few feet before coming to a stand, reason was the guard had flicked the local door switch and a passenger on the outside of the train had pressed the now illuminated 'door open' button. On the subject of bell buzzer '9' code, I think it could possibly be used if the guard had retreated to the back cab in an area with no phone signal however in that case the obvious course of action would be to contact the driver on the cab to cab phone.

Ahh thanks for that clarification. Am I right in thinking that that is a fairly uncommon arrangement? With the other Sprinter classes where you can see the Guard operate the doors (153/5/6) the local door switch seems to open the door from what I can remember.
On the other types of sprinter the original style panels do indeed operate the local door, the DKS is also shared in that vestibule area rather than one panel only like on a 158.

On the 156s that have been modified with centre door control panels they operate in the same manner as the 158s do, turn on DKS, operate local door switch, press door open on passenger control. The only downside to the middle panel is if you move the local door, or turn the DKS on or off in the middle then the local door shuts regardless of whether the doors are open or closed.
