Today see`s the first Greater Anglia Class 156 going to Wolverton for repaint into the Greater Anglia (white with red doors) livery and for DDA modifications, 156402 is expected to leave Crown Point around 09.15am.

If anyone can find out its route and post on here its would be great, also if anyone is out and about and sees the unit pass please post pictures on here.

Today is the last time to get a picture of 156402 in the Chapelfield livery.

Shame, the Chapelfield 156 was actually one of the smarter 156s in GA's fleet. What DDA modifications is it receiving, it already has a DDA loo does it not? Will their be any new carpets/seat shells/seat covers as while the seat covers are ok, the carpets are absolutely filthy and threadbare, and the seat shells have holes in them where their used to be tables and just look dreadful. I wonder if they will retain the Chapelfield tabletops :P

It doesn't have a DDA compliment loo at the moment, and will also come back with a provision for a new CET Tank. It will have electronic destination boards and PIS inside (complete with voice!), new carpets, new tables (no new Chapelfield bits), seat covers coming off for a deep clean (as 153's) plus the usual standard C6X work. Think of the 153's that have been done, and pair them ;)

But the 153s don't have retention loos or PIS systems :(

The compartment where the toilet is is damn near DDA compliant, it just needs a yellow surround on the button and a handle to help wheelchair-bound folk get on the toilet itself. If retention tanks are to be fitted I assume that means godawful vacuum-flush jobs, like a 170. When I am travelling Norwich to Ely I generally go for EMT over GA because the 158s don't have vacuum-flush loos :P.

Will seat-back tables be re-fitted to them, and if not will they at least fill the holes in the seat shells where the mounts are/used to be properly? New carpets are great news, they are filthy in the 156s.

I assume the PIS will be the same as the 170s as they sometimes run together to provide lengthened trains for the Lowestoft air show and other things.

Thanks for the info :D

I wouldnt expect it to be too soon as it sounds like a lot of work. I therefore don't think there we be an accurate and reliable date yet

All the GA class 153 refurbs ran over at Wolverton leaving 153314 not done, which now has to wait until after the class 156s are done in 2014 ish at a guess, as the average for the class 153s took longer than the 6 weeks they estimated.

I have observed pairs of class 153s working in the place of a class 156. On Monday 153309 / 153335 worked the 0612 Norwich - Gt Yarmouth and followed the rest of that diagram.

On Tuesday 153309 / 153335 worked the 1136 Norwich - Gt Yarmouth and rtn, 1306 Norwich - Lowestoft and rtn, 1445 Norwich - Sheringham and rtn.

General consensus is not before the end of the year with 402 having so much work done and it being the first unit done. The first unit on a refirb/overhaul always takes a bit longer.

Maybe we will see a return of T&T 47s and LHCS :P

Maybe another TOC will sub lease another DMU to GA or even 2x class 153s, they have had 2x 153s from LM and the class 150 from ATW.

Who knows, but GA on a good day techically now has 3 class 153s spare providing nothing fails. 1 at Norwich Crown Point depot all day, 1 at Ipswich from Mid morning that then forms 2013 Sax and the last Felixstowe. 1 that goes to Crown Point and then Royal Dock and forms last Ipswich - Cambridge.

So at present GA seems to be using 2 of those to replace 402.

The 153 that sits spare at Ipswich all day, from the December timetable chance, will not be spare anymore as it'll be used to operate the hourly Ipswich - Lowestoft.

The new hourly Ipswich to Lowestoft service from December will this require 2 or 3 units to operate the service?

So if it takes 3 units, will it be operated by:

1x class 170 that already works the route
1x class 156 that currently works the Saxmundham shuttle
1x class 153 that currently sits spare at Ipswich

Surely will a single class 153 be enough everytime i have travelled on the Ipswich - Lowestoft line its always been pretty full. Just have to make sure the class 153 doesnt end up on a peak time service out of Ipswich.

Good job the season is quieting down a bit. Great Yarmouth services on Mondays & Fridays have seen some dreadful overcrowding this year right through from April. The last few weeks have seen GA adding a 153 to the usual 156 between 08.36 & 15.36 ex Norwich when available. When this has not been possible it has not been uncommon for 30+ passengers to be left behind, BTP assistance required & taxis agreed to save things turning even more ugly.

156402 should be back at the end of November and the rest of The 156's should be done by the end of 2013 according to the EDP website

http://www.edp24.co.uk/news/3m_revamp_for_norfolk_and_suffolk_trains_1_1521051

Nine of the train companies’ two-carriage Class 156 vehicles will get a complete interior overhaul, with a deep clean, new carpets, seat covers and a new passenger information system.

The trains are in operation on several routes across the Greater Anglia network including the Norwich to Great Yarmouth, Norwich to Sheringham and Ipswich to Lowestoft lines.

Each train will also receive a brand new coat of paint in the company’s red and white livery.

Work on the upgrade started earlier this month, with the first due to be completed and returned to service at the end of November.

The entire refurbishment programme will continue until late 2013.

As part of the overhaul, extra work is being carried out to make the fleet compliant with future changes to the regulations for disabled passengers.

That extra work will include a revised seating layout to provide priority seats - two wheelchair spaces with “call for aid” buttons and a new universal toilet with wheelchair access.

anyone know which 156's are going away?

Dont know the numbers but all the Greater Anglia class 156's are to be refurbished.

I wouldnt be surprised to see more dmu's start to receive the same treatment in the future although operators may have a bit of dificulty releasing any units because of the current shortage of rolling stock.

Of course ATW might have the most luck releasing a class 150 since they have a bit of slack in the fleet apart from during major events etc in Cardiff

Greater Anglia's 156s are 156402, 407, 409, 412, 416 --> 419 & 422. As said above, all are to be refurbished, and fitted with Recorded announcements, LED destination indicators, a DDA compliant loo and a repaint essentially.
