156 Diagrams from Edinburgh

I am heading to Edinburgh on Thursday, so as well as taking in some of the festival, I am hoping to make a start on red-lining some Scotrail units. Just wondered if anyone knows which services from Edinburgh to Glasgow are diagrammed for a Class 156 unit, or is it just pot luck as to what is allocated to them? Many Thanks

Most services from Edinburgh Waverley to Glasgow Central are diagrammed as 156s - along with the occasional 158. As far as other routes are concerned such as the Fife Circle, it's basically a pot of luck, where 156s are vastly outnumbered to the 158s and 170s. Glasgow Central via Shotts services are you best bet

Edinburgh to Glasgow Central via Shotts are generally 156s. The slow services are run by a 158.

The only other usual 156 I can think of is the 1911 from Edinburgh to Kirkaldy and the return which leaves Kirkaldy at 20:27.

The Edinburgh - Shotts - Glasgow Central services are a general 50:50 mix of 158s and 156s. 5 or 6 diagrams cover the line each day and if you trace back each departure of RTT, generally the diagrams that start and finish at Haymarket depot are 158s, and those that start and finish at Corkerhill depot are 156s.

Apparently there is a one a week (Sunday) service between Edinburgh and Oban which is the only booked 156 working via Falkirk High - it also avoids Glasgow.

It's all been said, 156s on Edinburgh- Glasgow Central trains, 170s on Edinburgh- Glasgow Queen Streets and some Fife circles and borders, 158s do most borders and fife circles.

Regarding the reference to the Shotts route, it appears to be Class 158s on Sundays.

Also, the general rule of thumb is that on Mondays to Saturdays, the Shotts route alternates between a Class 158 and 156. E.g. xx26 off EDB may be a 158, the xx56 departure may be a 156.

Furthermore, if the Shotts route (M-S) has an all stations service heading in any direction, it then forms the limited stop service on its return working and vice versa.

Some of the EDV GLC via Motherwell Scotrail turns anoyingly still produce 156s on the turns that dont go to Ayr or North Berwick. Not guaranteed but the 10:xx from EDB of a weekday is often good for one

They should always be a 156. Both services from Breich are worked by the same diagram, which works an East Kilbride service in the late evening before ending at Carlisle.
