Did it exceed the performance envelope? Perhaps it will be fixed with sticky tape.

From RTT it looks like they were picked up by the following 1540 Euston-Manchester running on the Slow, and dropped off at Crewe at 1754 in time for the 1543 Euston-Glasgow via Birmingham to take them onwards.
The transfer seems to have taken about half an hour.
Meanwhile, several down trains were diverted via Stechford-Bushbury, but the 1620 Euston-Manchester took its normal route.
In the Up direction, trains were diverted on to the Slow line through Atherstone for a while.

I was looking for some sign that the Trent Valley reversible signalling was used to keep trains moving, but I can't see any Down trains using the Up Fast.
But the incident seems to have been well managed to cause only 30-45 minutes delay to an hour's worth of trains in the Friday peak.

They were picked up by a empty train that was running from Manchester to Euston and was held at Rugby. It was on site around 1845 and left site at 1958.
Also repairs went on until this morning in the early hours.

Ah, not so simple then.
I see it was 1Z78, 2004 Nuneaton-Glasgow arr 0004.
4 hours delay for the passengers.

Can confirm the bi-di was in operation. When passing Polesworth Station about 9 30pm, both down lines were on red and the up fast was showing single amber on the up fast , ver yannoyed yet to actually see a train using the bi-di.
