I read in Todays Railways that a 153 took the 1A16 Penzance to Paddington, failed at Plymouth and a 158 attatched to take it all the way, I assume as it didnt say if a HST took over. However we asked someone yesterday and he said yes it did.

Any proof/photos of this event, maybe a first for a 153 or 158 at Paddington, not the first 158 at a London Termini though.

Any help grateful,
James.

I thought the set had been changed at Temple Meads? For a HST?

It was a 153 from Penzance to Plymouth, 153+158 Plymouth to Bristol, HST to Paddington. Theres currently no way a 158+153 would reach Paddington on a service train, crew issues.

Crews not signed off all the way to Paddington? It would explain a lot!

FGW unit and HST crews are still totally separate, so no unit crew have route knowledge into Paddington. Guess there are ways around this whereby the unit crew could be route conducted by someone, the guard would also need a route conductor, so a bit to much hassle methinks. No doubt it will happen one day though......

A 158 and 153 went to Reading Depot a while ago I think. But that is as far as they got.

In 1998 up till about 2000 there was a West and Wales early morning service from Paddington to Penzance that was formed by a 158 throughout. I caught it as far as Plymouth a couple of times when I was serving on HMS Norfolk.
There was also a 158 from Paddington to Milford Haven that was a Great Western Service as far as Swindon where the same train became Wales and West. I caught that once as far as Newport.

Not sure how long crews retain knowledge of a unit but its definantly been done before.
