150 on settle to carlisle

Saw a 150 off on the evening service to Ribblehead from Leeds tonight. How often do 150s get on the S&C?

I remember getting the last train of the night back from Ribblehead once which was a 150. Not seen them on the longer distance runs before though.

If the booked 158 fails, it's a case of finding a replacement unit. If that happens to be a 150, it's better than a cancellation.

Running up to Ribblehead on the last train of the day is not so bad. However it would not be so much fun stopping in the high fells in the midst of a winter storm!

The 150/1 took over the diagram from the 1249 Leeds-Carlisle.
Not sure what happened to the 158.

Came back on the 1618 Carlisle-Leeds, and then finished the diagram with the 1919 Leeds-Ribblehead and 2100 Ribblehead-Leeds.

150s are not unusual on the route, they tend to turn up every so often.
I am yet to see a Pacer on a full S&C diagram, though I have seen one on the 1919 Leeds-Ribblehead and return...

The one time I've done the S&C it was a 150 which was a bit of shock to the system having been expecting to spend the time from Leeds to Carlisle on a 158! Still not the longest length of time I've spend on the same 150 on the same journey however...

But as a above it'll tend to happen when, for whatever reason, the booked 158 is unavailable. It then comes down to Neville Hill finding whatever unit it has sitting around with nothing better to do!

In BR days after the line was saved & they increased the service it wasn't uncommon to find a 142 attached to a 156 for the full journey & those were the days when track quality on the route was much worse than it is today... it must have been a teeth-grinding ride!

Around 20 years ago I recall doing Skipton-Appleby and back on a 3-car pacer (143/144, whichever it is) on the equivalent of the 094x off Leeds. It was the May BH Monday. Non-railway-minded family were less than impressed.

I'm guessing it would have been bus seats in those days !

The ex once did Leeds to Carlisle on a bus-seat single 142. That was the 1750 off Leeds, back in about 2001.

Yes, we must also remember 142s are cleared for the Clitheroe line so any future extensions to Carlisle from Clitheroe in the current climate you just couldn't rule out their appearance!

Yes, i believe 144s have occasionally made the foray over S&C!

I think I could put up with a 144 over it nowdays (as long as it had the trolley service )

I'm not sure how much protection 142's would offer against a Pennine winter storm, and that’s before the doors are opened!

Yes I travelled a single 142 about 12 years ago on the early saturday morning service from leeds to carlisle with bus style seats in the middle of winter, the train was freezing probably one of the worst train journeys I have ever had.

To be honest in those kind of conditions it might make sense to cancel another service in order to provide a more suitable train for the S & C in winter!

I once had a Merseyrail 142 on the 0947 Leeds to Carlisle... It was in the summer though and it was certainly a fun experience

Yes you do wonder about a 142s durability on the S&C especially if they were crossing Ribblehead in Gale force winds ! .... thats if it even crossed the viaduct!

It was full and standing most of the way, the long drag definitely lived up to its name!
