150 facts about the Tube

I love the fact that St James station is Grade I listed, and also that fewer than 10% of Tube stations lie south of the Thames.

is 55 incorrect?. i thought all lines connected with the rest of the network, so only one change of train is reqd between any two stations ( the exceptions being the Northern City and East London when they were under LT control) and the odd branch, south Acton, Chesham/watford and Aldwych.

It was true until the East London Line closed in 2007.

Number 134 is a new one on me: I lived in London for several years and never heard the Tube being referred to as "The Oxo." (Although I seem to remember many Londoners had other pet names for the Tube! )

Fascinating though the list undoubtedly is, it's nowhere near as entertaining as the Comments section beneath: it's well worth doing a Dave Gorman! (I never knew that Tube trains used to be one every minute because in the old days drivers were allowed to go through red signals, but now trains have to run at a politically correct speed instead! You learn something new every day!)

The Bakerloo, Central, Circle, Hammersmith/City, Jubilee and Northern lines all connect with every other Underground line.

The Met & District never meet, and the Waterloo/City never meets the Piccadilly or Victoria lines.

They come so close! District trains using Minories junction are so close to the Met buffer stops at Aldgate

W&C doesn't interchange with the Met or H&C either

Apologies if I confused people 're 55. It was true all lines interconnected on the map of 1960 when only 7 lines were shown The H+C and East London were still classed as being Metropolitan lines.so Met and District joined at Aldgate East. You would therefore needed a 'second' change at Whitechapel to get to New Cross from any other line

And the answer is completely different if we are talking about the physical connection of tracks - only the Waterloo and City is completely physically separate from all other underground lines. Otherwise, all other lines are linked in one way or another through various connecting spurs e.g. at Baker Street between the Bakerloo and Jubilee

Yep, even though I am a non Londoner, I have heard folk say "Let's get the Oxo".

And a few nicknames for lines that I have come across are
The Drain (Waterloo & City)
Circus (Circle)
Misery Line (Northern - reflecting it's poor reliability many years back)
Destruct (District)

No but if you want to do an interchange from the Met to the District, coming from the west (ealing, richmond, or wimbledon) you can easily get the train up to edgware road, along 1 to Baker street, and met from there, or if coming from the east, you can simply get a H&C train

All possible routes District to the Metropolitan Line involve at least two changes, so none of them disprove the point that only the Jubilee Line has direct passenger interchanges with all other lines.

As mentioned above, several other lines also interchange with every other line. The Jubilee line is the only line where you can get to every station on the network (bar Kensington Olympia) with no more than one change.

Actually, come to think of it, the Central line and Northern line also do this. I read up on the Jubilee line extension a few weeks ago and noticed this fact, bit I completely forgot that there are several other lines that do this

I feel awfully stupid now, especially as I believe Notting Hill Gate on the Central line has some Olympia services (I might be wrong again here though )
