When the 165s and 6s were ordered NSE wanted their units to be wired out to the couplers in a different configuration to the 14X and 15X previously built, then of course Chiltern needing to run 165/168 consists had little choice but to specify the same for the 168s.
I know the LM 172s were specified to work with 15X units, sadly the gangways between a 172 and a 153 are not compatable but the two will work in multiple so a similar situation should exist with a 156 or a 158.
I know the Chiltern 172s work with 16X, as for LOROL class 172s who knows?
I did read in a magazine many years back when the 172 was first muted, that the head of Chiltern at the time suggested switch in the cab could be provided linked to a multi contact relay thus providing the flexibility for them to operate with either 14X/15X or 16X.
