The remaining 150/1s were certainley about in the Bristol area Saturday. I caught 3 different ones a 2 carriage from Worle to Bristol Temple Meads working a Bristol Parkway service which was particularly tatty, a 3 carriage from Bath Spa to Bristol Temple Meads which was absolutely rammed and 150926 from Bristol Temple Meads to Worle. I won't be sad to see these go they're tatty and uncomfy compared to the GWR 150/2s. The only saving grace Saturday was the Bristol Temple Meds to Bath Spa leg on a Turbo in the declassified First Class section doing a Westbury service.

Someone on the ‘trains you’ve seen working’ thread reported a 150/1 doing a Bristol - Penzance working recently!

And 150925 is and they will be until the end of the year according to Gen.
150 125 is supposed to be next in to wabtec , poss end of March , but then would return to gwr , angel are looking to see if it’s corrosion Work can be deferred again so it would go to wabtec when gwr have finished using it , all depend on sole bar thickness

Am I correct to think that there are some 3-car class 150 sets? Are Northern getting those?

There's the two prototypes which are 3-car (150001&2). Then there are two non-toilet 150/2 cars which had their partners written off in accidents, so are used as centre-cars in two GWR 150/1s.

Northern's fleet plan involves a number of hybrid 3-car sets being formed (half a /2 sandwiched in a /1) but the prototypes are staying with GWR.

A recent post somewhere on here suggested some uncertainty over what to do with the two orphaned /2 cars.

Does anybody on here know why 150142 has been laid up (or stabled up) at Newton Heath Dean Lane Depot since about Saturday, its been stabled in the same place as well and doesn't seem to have moved, is there something wrong with it or dare I ask is is it just not needed?

Thanks for explaining. Are Northern taking all GWR’s 150s aside from the prototypes?

No - the 150/1s are going north. The 150/2s stay with GWR to work local services in Devon and Cornwall.

As for the two orphaned 150/2 coaches (neither has a toilet at present, so they can't be used together as a two-car set), two things seem to have been suggested:
  1. Do a major rebuild job on one coach to fit an accessible toilet and make a usable two-car set out of them
  2. Swap them as is for a complete Northern Class 150/2 and replace its existing toilet in the same way that other GWR dmus are being updated - if this happens, the two orphan coaches could be used by Northern sandwiched in a 150/1, as noted above.
It just seems be taking a very long time for a decision to be made.

Doesn't help that several larger fleets were split between ROSCOs at privatisation (150s and 153s for example). Whoever made that decision back in the 1990s was either a complete idiot, or they were deliberately trying to cause problems in the future! ;)

Fleets were split on the basis of the BR sub-sectors (effectively what we now see as TOCs).the idea was to introduce competition as fleets came up for lease renewal - obviously it didn’t work that way.

It did throw up some oddities where fleets had technical characteristics more like other fleets: eg 158863-872 are technically similar to Class 159/0 but ended up with Angel with the rest of the Wales & West 158s (rather than with the 159s at Porterbrook), or the three 86/1s with Eversholt (with the other passenger 86s) rather than with the 87s at Porterbrook.

I knew there'd be a more, er, "sensible" explanation! Seems that the whole of the Regional Railways sector was assumed to be "no growth" in the beginning then...

Not my area of expertise but can they not be inserted into existing 150/2s to make 3-car trains?

That would seem the obvious solution (and is exactly what was done with them in Centro days, and where they are now with GWR), but...(!)

150 108 is currently sat in Leeds at P5 in it's debranded FGW colours, presumably to form part of 2C46 16:29 to York via Harrogate.

In due course the two orphaned 150/2 cars will be extracted and refurbished, with one of them gaining a toilet in the process. This will allow a 'new'
150/2 to be created, which will be one of the 20 to be based at Exeter.
The two 150/1s will be despatched elsewhere, presumably to Northern.

Getting a lot of the unbranded GW 150s on Huddersfield-Manchester services at the moment.

Cycle space is very typical of First (they seem to despise cyclists, First Bus too) - it can take four bikes, but the space is taken by a tip-up bench that seats three, with nothing to suggest that it tips up. Try getting someone to move off that...

They're nicer inside at the moment than Northern and their can of fridge paint will ever manage, mind.

I hope the /2s do get split up as the ex-Centro units "cycle storage" doesn't even fit a bike.

The cycle area arrangements weren't installed by First, that's simply how they arrived at FGW from their previous TOC (and, I would assume, is how they were built). FGW just retrimmed the seats.

I'm slightly baffled as to why anybody would expect to be taking a bike on a bus, First or otherwise?

the 150/1 as built had 2 longitudinal seat seats behind the the 57veh cab. I couldn’t remember if refurbishments has halved this and put some normal seats in as per 150/2

Back when they were in the East Midlands people wouldn’t move. You put the bike on the doors. The guard would shift the people on the seats. Unwillingly if the train was full. Saying that BR banned bikes from busy sprinters even in the middle of the day. I remember having to look through a list of services trying to plan travel with my bike. Getting to Matlock in the summer was difficult for example. Peddle power from Derby often the solution.
