Just been reading an article in the latest edition of Rail magazine. That basically says train operators earn about 14p per passenger kilometre provided (or about 22p a mile).
Is such a figure likely to be more if only adult tickets sold were calculated?
From a personal point of view. In 2014 I travelled 3886 rail miles at 14.85p each. So I would say I did quite well? I put it down to: 1) About 1800 of my miles being attributable to a trip by train from Sheffield to Monaco and back. 2) Some other foreign mileage in Ireland and Australia. 3) knowledge of ticket splitting savings. 4) And being able to book longer journeys in advance.
I therefore conclude. If the powers that be ever clamp down on the art of saving money on fares by splitting. Which would be achievable by introducing a straight pence per mile system. We might be looking at least 25p per mile for the operators to safeguard their current levels of revenue. On this basis. HAPPY NEW YEAR TO OUR NONSENSE RAIL FARES SYSTEM!
