1434 Glasgow-Euston (1M15) October 3

I was relying on this train from Carlisle yesterday, but it was cancelled at Motherwell (running 21 down) because of "a problem with the train crew" according to RTT.
Does anybody know what really happened?
It's very unusual for a train to be cancelled so early in its journey, when it must have had a full crew to start with.
As far as I can see no substitute was provided from Preston, so everybody would be put on the following Edinburgh-Birmingham-Euston.

By compensation I did get to sample a TPE 397 all the way from Edinburgh to Manchester, not bad at all.
The worst riding was on the Cobbinshaw line at around 90mph, but better than I expected on the WCML.

Driver rostering issues.
Avanti were hoping for a footplate swap at Carlisle but one of the two services involved would have had an extended dwell at Carlisle which the Signalbox could not accomodate.
Therefore 1M15 terminated at Motherwell and turned back to Glasgow.
