A friends Network rail contact now says that Network Rail will not allow the 142s to operate in the south west,despite the planned relocation of units,amid fears that they would inevitably find their way onto the Devon/Cornwall main line as well as the branch lines.Can anyone substantiate this.

It'll be the usual story with FGW: "That was then, things have improved since, they'll be ok down here now, none of the problems that occured in the past with the 142's 'Skippers' will happen." Yeh rite! :roll:

They can't be used on Cardiff to Pompey - Pacers are banned from all third rail metals.

Theres still the opportunity - there are sets at the Weardale, Midland Railway Centre and Colne Valley (though the MRC set has Cummins engines and Voith transmission as per the 142/3/4s rather than the original Leyland TL11 and SCG Gearboxes which make them sound different to other Pacers).
If you're feeling really adventurous, some units were exported to Iran and can be found in traffic there.

So at the end of the day, does anyone know the probability that I'll be taunted by the trains that i thought i've just left in the North West, running along the Bristol to Taunton line?!? :???:

Just to let you know, they're here. Apparently 142001 & 064 are hanging out at Exeter Yard, presumably on driver training duties. They're still in North West Trains/Northern livery. Btw, just had the local news on (Westcountry News), & mention was made of run-down units (although it wasn't said they were 142s) coming down on a temporary basis, & showed at the end of the report, a Metro Class 143 :-?

Oh dear oh dear oh dear, they're in trouble already! lol Just watched the local BBC news, & they had a report on the 'Pacers' coming down here, problems they had with them in the '80s etc., & happened to be on one at the time, asking passengers what their thoughts are etc. Train was running ok so far on Barnstaple to Exmouth route, & broke down few stops before it got to Exmouth, as conductor couldn't close a set of doors! Once unit managed to get back to Exeter, the AWS decided to pack in as well! Is this a sign of things to come!?

Have fun with them....PS. Look out for lots of passengers with motion sickness on the Barnstaple branch. Pacers going at 55mph over 60ft jointed track is a very bad combination

fgw now have all 12 and the first two were out on diagram as mentioned above last week.
The reason why these fgw units will fail often is because they have not been to glasgow works like the rest of the northern fleet and are the ones with lots of faults and problems. They've not recieved the latest batch of modifications.
Theres no expectation for these units to be reliable

Reliable lol??? Experts have been telling FGW for the past month or so they're making a big mistake 'borrowing' these units. Would FGW listen? Not a chance, they think they know best, despite the major problems they had with them the last time they were down here in the '80s. And, like you said, to make matters worse, they havn't even bothered putting them in for overhaul. They've simply taken them out of 'warm store', given them a little run to make sure they're up to the journey south, send them on their merry way, get fitters at Exeter to give them the once over to make sure they're 'road worthy', start putting them into service. What happened yesterday just shows what's ahead. And then, we'll just turn round to FGW & say'WE TOLD YA SO!' :razz:

What was the mpc figure of those 142s before they were stored? I heard it was down around the 2000 mark (at best) ....

Er... not at all!
First Great Western have told the Government in very concise language they do not want the class 142s. The West of England Partnership has written to Government saying they do not want the units in their area.
The fuss the local politicians in the North made is greater than those in the South West. The North is very powerful in Westminster as it has many highly paid skilled lobbyists, and those for the South West are not due until 2009.
It is in no way the fault of First Great Western, they did not want the units to replace those 158s which are no longer with them. This is why privitisation is so popular, the Government and local authorities can make up for their own shortfalls because ills are blamed on the private companies. Many meetings with newspaper editors by transport campaigners are now slowly beginning to mean one part of the media accept this.
