142087 Gets refurbished?

I was on 142087 on 21st October from Haltwhistle to Newcastle, before the RHTT was deployed on Sunday morning and we were slipping and sliding all over the place. Wasn't refurbished back then and I doubt it would be now!

I was up at Heaton earlier this month and was told there was a 142 in for refurb but never paid attention to its number so it could well be 087.

I can confirm 142087 has been refurbished. Caught it from Mexborough to Doncaster on the morning of the 27th. Very clean and fresh inside...for now.

How thorough are these latest 142 refurbs? Even though they've only 7 years of life left in them, would be nice to see the 142s upgraded to at least the level of the 144s (with decent high-backed seating for one thing). Anything would be better than the terrible 'Northern Spirit' refurbished examples with their cheap and nasty seats that began to fall apart within weeks of being installed!

Of course, at best they'll be getting a deep clean and a lick of paint!

No point at all in putting in new seats for just 7 more years service. The money would be best set aside for future new stock.

Personally I like the ex NS 142s, on a night I find them cosy! ATM a lot of Northern work is being done at Heaton dude to workload at both NL and NH. When I returned from Heaton that day I came back empty on a 153. I'm not so sure I can say the reason why some units are taking longer than others to refresh but I will say a little use of your imagination will bring you the right answer!

well all the 158/8 had the seat cover changed and that's it and some of the 158/8 have been refurbished to full standards 158853 has been done for definite

Anyway - I understand Wabtec do a full internal refurb on a complete MKIV set in a week so 29 days to sort out a two car unit should be easy!

Remember it is just a bit of a tidy up inside - it isn't a full overhaul!

These 142s are being refurbished, 019 only has new seat covers and some paint, that is redecorating not refurbishing. The only way to properly refurbish a 142 is with a scrapman's torch

As Wabtec are taking about 5 weeks to overhaul each Mark 4 set at present, how is it possible to do a bigger refurb in 1 week?

I imagine Wabtec have a much bigger workforce than a couple of blokes doing certain bits at a time. I know the first 142 suffered from body corrosion as well as another larger issue. Then you have to send away things, await contractors etc so time builds up. Having seen it first hand I understand why it takes so long. Maybe the "refurb" just isn't as high a priority as other things so less time is spent. I think it takes up to 4 weeks maybe less from start to finish. Its worth remembering that the 14x fleet ate also having mods to the sanders due to a serious fault discovered in traffic

Ah yes, isnt that the FGW Has fitted sanders to our 142s. We'll not bother with ours...followed by Yep, time to modify our 14X units by fitting sanders....

1 unit is to be refreshed each week at Heaton,142019 was the trial unit,142087 was next,this took longer than planned as was the first done on the depot.
142065 has now been done while 142090 is currently on refresh but also requires new wheelsets.
When the old floor Lino is lifted any rotten wood is to be replaced,basically all the toilet flooring is shot.

Interior refresh only,new flooring,new seat covers but a new type seat containing the headrest is being sourced,new lighting diffusers,all interior panels re sprayed and the heating system modified.
