Next weekend my wife and I are travelling to Leeds from Newcastle on these trains ..

10:27 - 11:30 LNER, Newcastle to York

11:42 - 12:05 XCountry, York to Leeds

Even with senior railcards, I am sure we could both easily change platforms if required to make our 2nd train.

However, we have only been delayed once on LNER and that was also on a trip to York. That was caused by heavy rain, meaning the train was moving slowly for quite a while as it approached York. This week there is a lot of rain due, so my question is

If we miss our XCountry train, do we have to wait until the next XC train, or can we take any train.

We are travelling in first class, so at least we'll be able to wait in the York lounge if need be.

With advanced tickets you will need to wait for the next CrossCountry service, although there wouldn't be any harm in asking the guard if you can get the TPE.

Thanks

If TPE says yes .. that's great (let's keep our fingers crossed)

If however, they say no .. that would mean we'll arrive at Leeds exactly 60 minutes late (based on RTT timings) .. who would we claim delay compensation from?

If our LNER train was even 8 minutes late I would probably make it, but my wife wouldn't .. and I wouldn't ask her to. Having had COVID a few years ago, she still sometimes gets out of breath quite easily.especially if stress was added to the situation

LNER, since their delay made you miss your connection.

Looking at RTT, both services are due to use platform 5, although of course there's the chance for platform alterations in delays.

Also, as far as I can tell, the 10:27 LNER train starts at Newcastle, so it has a good chance of being on time. The 11:42 CrossCountry train starts at Glasgow Central, so it'll be following the LNER train all the way from Newcastle to York. Since the CrossCountry train has a longer journey, I think that's the one more likely to be delayed. In any case, it'll be on the departure board at Newcastle (10:40 train to Plymouth, I believe) so any delay should be evident before leaving Newcastle.

You may be wondering why we didn't just take the XC train in the first place.

Ideally we would have taken TPE straight, but when I booked it, something was happening and that option wasn't available for some reason.

Also, we like LNER with the ability to sit in the lounge at Newcastle with a cuppa.

Also, having heard so many bad things about XC, we avoid them .. the short trip to Leeds from York will be our first 'taster' trip with XC

UPDATE !

We easily caught our XCountry train to Leeds, in the 12 minutes we had, but it was chock-a-block.

Luckily, we had two decent seats (singles facing each other) in the first class carriage, but about 5 minutes after we were moving, folk were still walking up and down to see if there were any seats left .. there weren't.

I don't think we'll be travelling with XC again
