The New 11 Car virgin set, will this carry the Alstom logo on it? ruins the look i think

Also is it due to run on a certain route? not sure which stations are long enough for it?

All stations on the VT network except Lancaster, Oxenholme and Motherwell can hold 11-car Pendolinos, as well as the majority of North Wales stations.

I thought the 11 cars were working BHM-EDB services?

Apparently EC were surprised to learn that the DfT had proposed one of the 11-car sets would be commissioned on the ECML.
Clearly, Virgin were furious and EC were caught un prepared.

It later became popular gossip that, once commissioning was complete it would temporarily be used for one of the headline services (presumably the 4 hours Edinburgh-London) in EC's "Eureka" timetable for May next year. Ultimately, they'll be used on the WCML, though, once that franchise is re-allocated in 2012.

Will only retain the Alstom logo during commisioning for Dft approx 6 months, then it will go to whoever wants it. Im still unsure if EC will do line certification and relivery it for a service with them of less than a year, It just doesnt make commercial sense.

I would expect that the 11 cars set will be used on the London-Glasgow, and Birmingham-Glasgow where possible.

As London-Birming/Man are very busy routes however with 3 trains an hour, there isn't such a need for this extra capacity appart from a few trains during the day.

No way - hourly Glasgow service yes, but hourly Liverpool also and the peak/most popular Manchester services.

Stafford is fine, all of its five through platforms can accommodate 15 x 20m cars, roughly 13 cars of a Pendolino, as can Macclesfield in the Down, but the Up may need work. The high numbered platforms may be OK at Liverpool, but places like Watford Jn, Milton Keynes Central, Rugby, all stations to Wolverhampton and all stations to Crewe, along with Runcorn, Warrington BQ, Wigan NW, Preston, Penrith, Carlisle, Lockerbie, Haymarket and Edinburgh should all be fine, as are Stockport, Piccadilly (exc. p4) and Stoke. Wilmslow on the Up (from Stockport) should be interesting though, that can barely hold a 9-car Pendo!

I think it's safe to say that if the 11 car 390 replaced a 9 car 390 on any of the routes during the peaks, I doubt there will be many seats left unoccupied.

At Euston the only platform i think could hold a 11-car is one at the end (not sure of the number) but the Caledonian Sleeper uses that Platform and its just Long enough

All the main platforms (deffo the low-numbered ones) will take 11-cars, not even DfT wou.ld be stupid enough to do that. The Cally Sleeper only occupies p1 (the one you were referring to) for the early morning and evening.

- Stafford needs work on both 1 and 3, an 11 car will block the track circuits.
- Same for Lime St on 7 8 and 9.
- Manchester Picc 7 8 need work.
- Runcorn going down needs work.
- Coventry and International need work on 2 platforms.
- Macclesfield needs work on the Up.

I would be interested to find out how many platforms at Euston could hold the 11 car 390 - the 3 x 350s would seem to fit on most (apart from Overground platforms). Platform 18 can hold a 12 car 350 consist for example

For arguments sake, each 350 is 81.6m (http://www.therailwaycentre.com/New EMU Tech Data/EMU_350.html) meaning 3 x 350s would be 244.8m

The new 11 car 390 should be around 265m long (given current 9 car stats).

I would find it hard to believe that Virgin Trains would suggest increasing the whole of the 390 fleet to 11 cars without finding out whether the existing platforms could take an 11 car 390?

If you assume 265m as the length then platforms 1-7 (5 and 6 are very tight), 12-16 and 17b are ok.
