Seen a lot said, I wondered a few things.
How did it get to the uk? I've only seen videos of it with a 66, obviously it couldn't have gone through the chunnel with that so how did it get past the channel? Any pictures?

There is a thread on this started about Jan 2011 (when 390054 was delivered) you will find lots of info/banter there. I had a quick search but I cannot remember the name of the thread !.

Another couple of possibilities:
Mission Accomplished, until we actually looked at the trains!

Well, there's a few discarded "Virgin" prefixed plates going spare from other Pendos that have had renamings, unless they've been sold on. I think there's enough available to name all four of the new units if so desired.

I personally don't think another loco should ever be called City of Glasgow on the wcml, an lms Coronation class crashed near London.

Thanks for the name info, I didn't feel moved to reach for an old copy of the Platform 5 book to look them up myself.

There was also an 87 (87006) named "City of Glasgow" inbteween the unfortunate Duchess and Pendo of the same title that operated without mishap (As far as I'm aware). I feel that it would be difficult to discontinue use of the name in the future (If the replacement for the Pendolinos has a naming scheme in 25 years or so) when the city it refers to is such an important and influential part of the West Coast main line.

Oxenholme doesn't make the cut with regards to the names because it's not a city, which seems to be the only criteria those that have had a Pendo named after them have to fulfil! With the likes of Bangor and Lichfield in the mix, you do have to ask whether more suitable names not adhering to the theme could have been found: They're not exactly regular Pendolino calling points!

Why would anyone need to put Virgin names on the four new trains anyway? By the time they enter service there'll be a different franchisee...

That's a good point, I'd forgotten about the franchise retendering. If Virgin aren't re-awarded the West Coast then all the names will disappear. Well that sucks...

Could go either way. How many previous franchise competitions have been retained, and how many changed? Virgin have no divine right to retain the WCML, indeed I'd suggest there'll be a fair proportion of the decision makers who are dead against it, especially after Virgin's refusal to introduce the new and extended trains without both financial compensationa and a franchise extension.

NX hopefully won't be in the running due to their failure with the EC.
FG have had an awful time around 2006, really struggling to run trains on time and passengers were rightfully disgusted.
I can't see DB getting it due to the fact Arriva have the XC franchise, I believe the DFT want to keep the three operators to Scotland seperate to foster competition, anybody after the EC in the future would have to consider the WC detracting from the possibility of them winning both.
Govia have no experience running intercity routes really, they can't give the most profitable line to some newbie in the field.

That's about it really, personally as someone who lives by and regularly uses the West Coast I am perfectly happy with VT, i'm sure the DFT have their dislikes due to various goings on, but really compared to the rest of the lot they're not bad! The name and prestige the Virgin brand brings with it I beleive has helped bolster the WCML and the XC route (people still think it's VXC in many cases).

I'm putting a large imaginary wager on DB getting it, they're not concerned about cross-franchise competition. The competition is coach, air and car.

But I think one thing we can agree on is VRG not retaining the franchise. And about right too in my humble opinion. More style than substance, blame everyone else for their issues and not really invest in their stations and operation. The only thing they've managed to do well is get their staff onside and keep them onside.

No operator had experience at the start. GoVia aren't bidding anyway, they've said their interest is in lucrative commuter franchises. Stagecoach have indicated an interest, and nothing to stop them doing it. I think they'd be in with a good chance, they have a good track record, although not overly ambitious.

Really?! If sncf won and kept their NOL sets then I can see some good times to be had.
