I obtained a First in Mathematics at Manchester University in 1966, so I am monitoring all the young rapscallions who have been flaunting their knowledge of this subject on recent posts.

Exams may be getting easier (which I don't believe) but the average university offer has increased.

Have you ever heard the phrases....."Speaking from experiance?.....The callowness of youth?"

There is the reversal of your stated view above...it is the ones with no experiance of life who are insecure, as they have no known levels of life to monitor their experiances against events that are still to occur. Many debates are entered into by the youth of today with total passion but very little knowledge of life. The English Blackshirt movement of the 1930's had very many young passionate idealists, but no knowledge or actual experiance of life during the Great War, when so very many young people died on the Western Front.

It is unfortunate that Socrates cannot be here to defend himself.

I retired in 2010 having been a Senior Manager in various industries. I will say that the old adage still holds true that Mathematics widens the mind and is an aid to logical thinking. My father was a lecturer in Mathematics at Warsaw University in the 1930's and it is from him that my main subject was developed.

To use its CORRECT terminology, Goldbach's conjecture still to this day remains an unsolved problem in number theory, as detailed below:-

Every even integar greater than 2 can be expressed as the sum of two primes.

I thank you for bringing this matter to the forum. It has featured in many differing mathematical discussions over the years. I think that reference was made to it in an episode of the television series called "MORSE", which as you know is set in Oxford, where a university professor working upon this conjecture had his working papers stolen. I thought this showed a good amount of research by the script writing team, which unfortunately would have not received its true understanding by the majority of people viewing this programme.

You will, of course, be aware of a similar theorum, that is Lemoine's conjecture which states:-

All integars greater than 5 can be represented by the sum of an odd prime number.

Yes it does, thank you. I was just curious. I am half Polish, funnily enough, but I have never visited Warsaw. One day I will go.

I am not very good at computer use (no such thing when I was at school), so I just use one off the "stock" ones off the forum. I have just changed it from a class 313 to the Eurostar.

If I could put a new avatar on, it would be a plate of Hollands Meat Pies, as the sight of them would get me off the website to eat my evening meal and back to having a life,:roll:
