Maybe the one on the depot was under repair earlier?

There are loads of reasons why a train is short formed, plus the fact that Exeter Depot are having a bit of a rough time of it at the moment.

An everyday and quite widely scattered story of single 153 operation throughout the system. It is apparently tolerable in rural districts but not urban for some reason.

no, in urban districts it is 12-car trains with people standing down the aisles and 8-10 in each vestibule.

Not every train, obviously, but the same applies to 1-car rural trains.

Playing "who's more overcrowded" top trumps is daft and pointless.

Had the same problem with the 1722 from EXC tonight. 200 people trying to get on a delayed single car is....an impressive sight. Thankfully a cleverclogs told the Depot at St Davids to warm up its twin to join when we eventually arrived.

I really would love to know in what universe it was thought sending a single 153 through Exeter at rush hour was a good idea, especially when there was apparently seemingly another one waiting around at EXD in the first place

The service is booked to be 3 carriages, but 143620 had failed at some point. Better to send the train as 1 carriage than cancel it entirely. I expect the 153 was either on maintenance earlier or had been taken off another service.

Another problem with overcrowded 153's is station overtime. Boarding & unloading takes so long that station stops can be extended by a minute or more at every stop.

I'm not: the use of the word apparently indicates more of an observation on what some say rather than an indication of what I may assert.

Certianly a situation which I experience from time to time, small doors and vestibules/aisles being the prime reasons here; crowding on the 09.20 GMB-NNG usually assures a late arrival at Lincoln even though the Guard does his best to shepherd Market Rasen passengers towards the "right end" of the train: prams, buggies, wheelchairs, bicycles etc. Coupled with the fact that the station working allowance at MKR for this particular service is slightly shorter than some others during the day and a queue of unpaid fares at LCN's barriers can lead to a shorter stay in the City than one originally expected.

16.45 Newark North Gate (17.23 Lincoln) to Grimsby Town likewise, there have even been extreme cases reported of passengers being refused entry at Lincoln.

This has improved slightly recently, with the Friday working being back up to 2-car operation (a pair of Class 153's). However, Monday to Thursday is still single Class 153 operation, so isn't fully resolved!

Thank you, that's worth remembering, as I have avoided this train at all costs since last December.

This morning was interesting!

At Castleford station there were about 4 times the usual patronage waiting for the 10:02 to Leeds (The 09:06 stopper service from Sheffield). This was due to a motorway accident J30 - J31 so everyone obviously had the thought 'Just get the train instead!'.

The look on some of their faces when a 1 carriage unit arrived! (I think it was a 153?). To add to their frustration, by this point it was already running 10 minutes late.

Some passengers got left behind at Castleford and there was no chance of any passengers getting on at Woodlesford, but we got delayed for quite a bit there while the conductor vs the angry passenger war took place and then a passenger suffered so much from claustrophobia she ended up finishing the journey riding in the cab with the conductor!

It was certainly an interesting journey!

Yet everyone will have been really really annoyed with Northern a disgrace because they can't just with a few hours notice take 4* passenger numbers as Motorway is shut.

Any idea why the 18:00 Leeds to Knottingley is short formed at the moment? Some people this evening certainly didn't seem too happy, apparently it was the third day in a row.

The bottleneck being people wanting to get off at Woodlesford and Castleford :D

Possibly due to a 3-car class 144 (The usual traction on this run, I believe) being taken out of service recently following fire damage? Northern appear to have shuffled a 142 into it's place this week on this particular run.

It is reported elsewhere on the Forum that due to VTs delayed at Stoke (storm related) London passengers on a Pendolino have been advised to travel by EMT to StPancras via Derby. The train from Stoke to Derby is a 153.

I've thought for a while that if the Stoke to Derby line was upgraded and electrified it would be a useful diversion route and add resilience to the network. It's normal passenger levels alone wouldn't justify it, but occasions like today would have been easier to deal with.

Interesting you mention that. Network Rail are slowly starting to appreciate the importance of resilience in the network in this scenario. I think the point you raise will increase the lines chances, shame it isn't done now for the upcoming blockades.

It does also then raise the question can the MML cope with the additional traffic. Well no it can't really. The problems this causes is often blamed on privatised network when in actual fact it is just the shear use of the existing network leaves little capacity to do the sort of thing BR used to be able to do.

Once again VT are passing their problem onto someone else!

Thet are good at doing that, but I wonder if they asked EMT if they would accept the passengers first?

Indeed. It's unusual to have a single 153 on the Hallam stopper. Not unknown by any means, but certainly unusual.

A few years ago now, XC (in Virgin owned days) had to terminate a Voyager to the West of England at Bristol Temple Meads due to failure. They advised passengers to catch the 19 00 (at the time) Bristol TM to Exeter (FGW) which was booked a 153. On the other hand, earlier this year, ECML were suffering major OLE problems in the York area. They must have consulted XC about passengers using their trains but XC refused stating they were rammed already.
