Just wondering what people make of Denton train station? as far as trains go there aren’t any (apart from the 1 a week service in one direction.. No return..) I know they cant scrap the line but 1 a week surely they can increase the service

The only reason that there is a train on that line, is because they HAVE to run a service on it. Hence the name "The Parlimentary".
If it were up to Northern, then there wouldn't be a service.
There was talk of increasing the service, but I doubt it will happen.
Plus there are no lights at the stations, meaning that passenger services cannot operate after dark, cause passengers can't see where they are or where they're going.

It would depend if it is worthwhile for the TOC. The DfT has not put it in the minimum service requirements and it's obviously not profit making so Northern will not use up valuable rolling stock, fuel, staff and other costs.

The local authority (or PTE I believe in that area) would have to cough up if they want to see a service level increase. IME that is unlikely because government priorities are moving towards buses and the traffic speeds in the area are about average.

It would aparntly cost too much in legal fees to close it, even if the costs of the weekly service could be better invested elsewhere. Stay tuned, the line my be "closed" (kept for freight and ecs), or we may see a regular service.

I'd say that national approach favours cars rather than busses. Money for investment in rail seems to be being pushed towards the farepayer while roads investment is vast now due to lack of any transport investment in the past decade.

The current service is a bit pointless as it doesn't really go anywhere useful.

Denton station is quite well placed near the M60/M67, so would be ideal for a parkway station with a direct service into Manchester Victoria. I don't know what the area around there is like though, there probably isn't space to build such a station.

I reckon there is huge untapped potential for Denton Railway Station. All it needs is for people to think long-term, think about what we can do, rather than making excuses for not doing anything. Problem was that Tameside Council doesn't care (only bothered about Metrolink to Ashton and Longdendale Bypass schemes), GMPTE lost its powers to the SRA/DfT, and Northern have started making tremendous progress after years of stalemate.

To quote GMPTE from http://www.gmpta.gov.uk/uploads/agendas/2/87/Reports/Item 09. Rail Route Utilisation Strategy.pdf :

"The feasability of operating some trains via Reddish South and Denton to Victoria needs to be established, and the benefits appraised. This could influence the need for improvements to Heaton Norris Junction."

Denton station also failed a recent GMPTE audit in scoring for GM Rail Stations Service Quality. Reason being was that the auditor was unable to gain access to the station. The access gate had been padlocked by a person or persons unknown. The gate has now been removed to prevent a recurrence of this incident.

The position of Denton train station is a bit out of the way from the populated parts of Denton (as down that area is a motorway and supermarket not much there) If they reduce the service on the Manchester rose-hill line and put the dmu,s on the Denton line the service will be more frequent and Attract more people to travelling by train due to the fact it will be cheaper to get to Manchester then by bus

And for the rose-hill line after riding on the line it is always empty on the train and the stations along the way are all but deserted especially at Hyde central where the station is poor quality with no shelter (left standing) and the seats are no where near where the train stops for some reason ..

This could also be a major obstacle to a park and ride, which has the potential to increase a congested area further. There have been studies which have shown badly sited park and rides can simply move congestion problems elsewhere.................Now who is up for risking making an important road junction's congestion problems even worse for a small benefit to city centre congestion....not many I bet.

No seriously tho, probably they don't run a proper service is due to money and they will make a loss if they do, have a look in the Business plan and see what it says if anything?

EDIT: Why did they reduce it in the first place as there's what 2 train stations on that line and one of them has a North Station to is?

Train station's American. Anyone who says it might as well call pavements sidewalks.

This is where the English language can be called ridiculous.

Rail Station suggests that it is where the rails become stationary, when in fact it is the trains that become stationary (as per the term "Train Station").

Anyway, call it what you like, it doesnt matter at all.

As much as I agree with tubenutter in that train station is the technically correct term if you go into the nitty gritty (the train becomes Stationary), I really don't care. Train station's easier and quicker to say. I personally alternate to keep variety, but more often than not I just say, for example, "Blairhill Station".

We also say 'get on the train'. Say that in French and they'll give you a funny look. They, quite rightly, say 'get in the train'.
