Thanks 'Temple' - that possibility occurred to me after I posted. BTW, I'm still not clear why the 387s aren't classified as 377/8s - are there too may differences between them and the 377 family?

It's possibly just an easy way of defining the key difference which is that this is a 110 mph sub-fleet amongst all other Electrostar classes, ensuring that no-one accidentally diagrams a 377/x on the wrong services?

Within reason TOCs or ROSCOs can alter unit numbers for their own convenience any time, it is the individual vehicle number that is the key data in the rolling stock library.

Not quite sure how far a 321 could get towards Brighton under it's own power- all about how far it could coast once the wires run out...

Well it'd probably get to at least City Thameslink after the catenary stops near Farringdon — and it's all Down from there!

Coming back on the Up lines would be impossible though. ;)

The wires go to City Thameslink now. Could it make it up the hill to Blackfriars with a fast enough run-up?

You'll also not see where the timing load changes from a dusty bin anyway. There wont be SRTs in for them past Willesden West London towards Clapham and it will have been changed to something else at the stop at Wembley.
