0600 Edinburgh-Kings Cross

Interesting situation on the ldbs this morning:-
The 0600 Edinburgh-Kings Cross is cancelled due to an "operating incident" yet there is an "additional train" running from Grantham to London at 0926, ie in the times of the cancelled train.
From where would they get the stock to run this "additional train"?

It suggests to me the train is running empty from Edinburgh to Grantham.
If it's not too sensitive, can anyone explain what is going on.

Sounds more like there's a spare set at Bounds Green and spare crew going that East Coast can utilise to cut down on the delay repay costs!

Indeed that is the more likley occurance. A driver and guard on spare at kings cross will have taken the set up from bounds green, probably no catering crew. The 0600 did actually make it to Newcastle and terminated there so unlikley the set would have gone empty from there unless there was no guard available at Newcastle

What time was this?
Had it already passed some stations?

I saw it first about 0915 on the service alterations column on the EC website and then checked the ldb for Grantham on the National Rail website.

This train has been terminated at Newcastle quite often, over the past few months.

Normally, it sits at the platform for 14 minutes, and morphs into the 0752 departure from Newcastle.

It has been quite amusing to hear the descriptions of the various "incidents" that have befallen this remarkably unfortunate service.

I can assure you the incident was no laughing matter for those involved.

which is exactly what occurred today. However as it was a planned cancellation and uploaded before last nights cut off, you'll be glad, I'm sure, to know the 0600 was "on time" at "destination" and therefore made PPM.

An additional service did operate from Grantham to London in place of the cancelled 0600 service.

There was an incident yesterday of a train hitting ballast, I don't believe it was an EC service but there was some considerable delays to some services so it may well have been a case of a set being in the wrong place overnight.

The 0600 forming the 0752 from Newcastle is fairly common.
