00:xx Services

Just wondering what your local TOC(s) announce 00xx services as? Never noticed it before, but SWT used the phrase "Midnight 18 service to Southampton Central" to describe my train home from work this evening, which I thought was something a little different.

18 mins past midnight, owe owe eighteen, or 12 o clock...

I've never heard it, but I assumed they (SWT) would say "Oh oh Eighteen"...

They'd never say 12 o'clock, as that would confuse the pax and there's a bit of a thing for "hundred hours". What would a service leaving at 00:00 be? "Platform 4 for the Midnight Hundred Hours South West Trains service to..."

Talking of announcements, I think we should go back to the old system:

Platform 1 for the Desiro to London Waterloo. Calling at Southampton Parkway, Eastleigh, Winchester, Basingstoke, Woking, Clapham Junction and London Waterloo. The Desiro to London Waterloo will leave from Platform 1.

The Desiro to London Waterloo is now at Platform 1. Calling at Southampton Parkway, Eastleigh, Winchester, Basingstoke, Woking, Clapham Junction and London Waterloo. Passengers for the Reading line and stations to Brookwood should change at Basingstoke. Passengers for stations to Clapham Junction, and Heathrow Airport should change at Woking. Passengers for Gatwick Airport are advised to change at Clapham Junction. The Desiro to London Waterloo is now at Platform 4. Calling at Southampton Parkway, Eastleigh, Winchester, Basingstoke, Woking, Clapham Junction and London Waterloo. Southampton Parkway, Eastleigh, Winchester, Basingstoke, Woking, Clapham Junction and London Waterloo; the Desiro now at Platform 1.


The Sprinter to Cheltenham Spa is now at Platform 3b. Calling at Romsey, Dunbridge, Dean, Salisbury, Warminster, Dilton Marsh, Westbury, Trowbridge, Melksham, Chippenham, Swindon, Kemble, Stroud, Stonehouse, Gloucester and Cheltenham Spa. Passengers for Exeter and the West of England should change at Salisbury. Passengers for Bristol, Newport and Cardiff should change at Westbury. The Sprinter to Cheltenham Spa is now at Platform 3b. Calling at Romsey, Dunbridge, Dean, Salisbury, Warminster, Dilton Marsh, Westbury, Trowbridge, Melksham, Chippenham, Swindon, Kemble, Stroud, Stonehouse, Gloucester and Cheltenham Spa. Romsey, Dunbridge, Dean, Salisbury, Warminster, Dilton Marsh, Westbury, Trowbridge, Melksham, Chippenham, Swindon, Kemble, Stroud, Stonehouse, Gloucester and Cheltenham Spa; the Sprinter now at Platform 3b.

Auto announcers would be the same all around just voice ones that would say anything that's common for that area.

London Victoria does not have any recorded announcements for trains departing at 00:XX as the local council bylaws do not allow us to make any announcements (except in the event of an evacuation) between the hours of 23:00 and 07:00 due to various hotels in the vicinity of the station.

At Lewisham Station, announcements are played at very reduced volume before 07:00, even though the first trains of the day are at about 5AM. I'm guessing it says "Oh Oh hundred hours." And i remember reading somewhere that no trains actually leave at 00:00, it's 23:59 or 00:01.

The sleeper at 0020 at Plymouth is announced as "Midnight twenty" by Phil Sayer.

we dont have announce ments at melton mowbray..they jus turn up and dissapear as if nothing was there lol...and i think the only trains tht run throughtmelton are all frieght...altho saying that we do have a few HST's running through very early

That is correct - it says so in the NRT.

Although saying that there was a Thameslink train timetabled at Wivelsfield IIRC at midnight about 4/5 years ago - this was changed to 00.01.

Just as another point I think 00.00 is used only on digital clocks for ease of representation of the time. Although it is 'wrong' the actual representation for midnight (on the railway anyway) is given as 24.00 (this was also what was shown in the TL timetable) - if Phil HAD to announce that (not that he would) it'd be 'midnight' or 'twenty four hundred hours' - not 'oh oh oh oh', 'oh oh hundred hours', nor 'midnight hundred hours'.

(The reason I did say 'wrong' is because a day is officially 00.00.00 - 23.59.59 and 24.00.00 does not really exist as clocks would go 23.59.59, 24.00.00, 00.00.01).
