A campaign to restore rail travel to a community in Monmouthshire has taken another step forward.

A funding application has been submitted to the Department for Transport to build a new £7m railway station for Magor and Undy.

It would be on the south Wales mainline.

Two stations serving the villages closed in 1965 when the areas' population was 500. It is now expected to rise to 10,000 in the next 10 years.

The application - for one new station - has been made by Monmouthshire council and the Magor Action Group on Rail.

It asks for £5.2m of funding, with the rest of the money anticipated to come from the Welsh Government.

Hopefully this link will work - a Google Maps search result for the area is one I made with this thread and should be at this link right here.

Here's a screen grab if that link doesn't work

Is the location that is a few miles west of Caldicot and Severn Tunnel Junction?

I'm having problems with my ISP at the moment regarding loading of pages that contain images.

Yes, the location is to the west of STJ - part of the rationale for the station is to relieve parking at Severn Tunnel Junction.

Yes, the location is to the west of STJ - part of the rationale for the station is to relieve parking at Severn Tunnel Junction.

STJ has been a huge success since the station was modernised and a large car park provided, so much so that the car park is often full and people park in nearby streets and the nature reserve across the line. The road bridge across the line by the station is being closed from 5 December for a year while it is rebuilt which will make parking even worse.
