A friend of mine has been purchasing off-peak returns from East Croydon to Eastbourne.
She pays £29.10 to leave off-peak and return off-peak a few days later. She says that she was told that such tickets cannot be used outbound between 1530 and 1900.
As far I know, the only outbound restriction is that you use it after 9.30am. Doing a dummy booking on the National Rail site seems to confirm this. You can book a return outbound at around 1700 and return the next day - £29.10 ticket is available and described as "off peak".
Could anybody clarify?
