£/mile Track Costs

While I appreciate the arguments over whether Northern Ireland should be included here or not, I thought it the best place to discuss future infrastructure developments despite it not being part of NR. Apologies if I have used the wrong forum.

The Department for Regional Devolpment in Northern Ireland has released a consultation paper for future investment in NI Railways, one option being reinstatement of some lines to the West of the six counties.

The tone of the paper is quite pessimistic with regards to such extensions, quoting a cost of track per mile at £11 million (not including stations, bridges, etc). Politics aside, does this represent a realistic figure or are the bean counters rounding up?

If their including financing, legal, consultation and design costs in the figure their roughly accurate, ive often seen £10m per km for above ground and £100m for tunnel used as a baseline.

Since the recent forum restructure "National Rail Forums" have become "UK Railway Forums", to remove doubt over where freight related matters are discussed, with Northern Ireland now here too. So definately posted in the right place

And just for a bit of further clarification, matters relating to cross-border travel should be put in international travel the same as threads on Eurostar
