Diesel running under wires on the ECML north of York?

That was never satisfactorily answered in the main ECML upgrade discussion thread. I doubt DfT even considered it worthy of an official explanation…

    Portsmouth to IOW?

Impossible. The only ferries that go between Portsmouth Harbour and Ryde Pier Head are relatively small passenger vessels, anything that goes on rails has to move by road transport and use the Portsmouth to Fishbourne vehicle ferries.

Last trains to be put into a non-GBR livery, and hence/also the last trains to be put into the GBR livery?

I don’t think it will be “arms length”, I think it will be micro managed. Whatever the PR guff says.

My son has just received a fine to be paid in full of £3115 in 14 days.

Well thought through - or something you've done yourself? :D o_O

    Contactless connections

We can probably explain it more easily if you tell us the exact origin and final destination. The default fare (in the absence of other touches), may include London Terminals and/or a zone 1 journey.

Offal - why are less-desirable cuts of meat more expensive?

I always thought it was no accident that Offal and Awful sound a bit similar…

Will Steam Locos Be Able to Flip Around When Cardiff West Junction is Modified?

I recall an explanation of a turning move a few years ago, that led to a steam loco running from Portsmouth Harbour as far as the approach to Fareham tunnel, then to Havant, then back to Portsmouth. It was theoretically using what’s known as the ‘Farlington Triangle’, but ran much further to...

Could City Thameslink open on Sundays?

The sidings only hold 8 cars as you are probably aware, so the reason the changeover is attempted at the first opportunity in either direction is that 12 car trains can still run on AC or DC as applicable to the next station and reverse from there. Basically it provides an advance warning to...

    Trivia: False destinations on trains

Salisbury - Romsey services via Southampton and return use false destinations at various points on the routes. Platform displays at Romsey show Salisbury for northbound trains, but southbound trains are announced as heading to Redbridge if routed via Chandlers Ford; or as heading to Chandlers...

    HS2 Old Oak Common

    It’s accidentally been built by Hyperlink… o_O :D

    HS2 Old Oak Common

But isn’t it also the sort of predictable error the authors of the press release could have forestalled, if they’d simply written “450m long underground platforms…”

Things in living memory which seem very anachronistic now

Nice work, ‘knapped flints’ framed by brick, but a completely different technique to pebbledash. Quite common in Hampshire, allegedly the flints were common near the South Downs. I always thought pebbledash was far more common in Scotland than England, but I’ve no idea if that has continued...

    HS2 Old Oak Common

As far as I can see, there’s every likelihood 3 of the 4 islands will be completed by the time of the track slue. So it’s possible that by then they can run a four track GW railway past platforms where no work is taking place at all. Or even position a couple of the four tracks temporarily...

Transpennine Route Upgrade and Electrification updates

There’s definitely no platform 7, and the station design & access statement doesn’t mention an emergency exit specifically from P6 (it doesn’t really have a ‘back’ as it’s part of the P5/6 island), its two means of escape will be the extended subway and the new footbridge. But the P5/6 island...

Scrap EMR Connect and extend Thameslink to Corby

    Somewhere between 360 and 700 times I think…

Transpennine Route Upgrade and Electrification updates

It’s also quite a while since the P1 and P2 designations were swapped round, (coming up to a year), so that shouldn't be a source of confusion now?

HS2 Construction Updates - Birmingham Area

Well, they didn’t hang about with that short section of segmental construction. About 3 days?

What was the gangway (if you can call it that?) on the 458/0s for?

Is that Buddlia growing in the bellows? o_O

Lewes derailment - Thursday 13th August

There are photos in post #184 showing it off the rails but still almost vertical, but next to a badly distorted rail. My suggestion is the Kirov cranes might have lifted it onto the other track?

    Unbuilt Connection to London Waterloo?

Yes I think so - so looking at the underground entrance the minor road junction off York Rd would be to the left. I’ve linked to a 1916 25” map which has the station marked, and also has the Belvedere Road signal box present. (On the NLS Maps website there are sometimes more maps hidden away...
