Lumo have now started selling this route. £33 Glasgow London - 5 hr 52 mins for the evening service. Whereas the 5 hr Avanti train around the same time is £36 in advance. But as pointed out it's the £10 Glasgow Newcastle that people might go for.

How many people are actually using standard premium on the 6.40pm Avanti though? My point was that last service of the day travellers are not high spenders. Lumo can't compete with Avanti on speed or comfort, so as far as I can make out the only way they could make this work for Glasgow-London...

I would say that the "feels slow" parts were also quite far into the journey, and based on previous experience, also certain sections all the way up to Edinburgh. Would it be fair to say the WCML is fairly speed optimised given the terrain, and the ECML is held back by pathing issues?

Ah ok, so it seems I am actually wrong, and they have released some AP tickets for a cancelled strike day. Perhaps there is an unwritten rule that AP are never available for popular football match times, or even every Sunday afternoon/evening (impossible to check due to forthcoming Strikes)...

Thanks, but I imagine a 7 hr journey is not using an Avanti train. I think TOCs should be mandated to make AP tickets available on every day of the year. Of course if they sell out that's another matter, but it's not the case here.

Just did a quick search for a mid-week journey using Scotrail+Lumo+Thameslink in 3 weeks time: £110 with a railcard. 6hrs. 2 changes. 15 stops. So via Edinburgh is worse than the Avanti+GN solution I proposed to my friend: £90 with a railcard. 5.5-6 hrs. 1 change. 8 stops.
