Trivia - Four digit route numbers?

I recently passed a school bus service near where I live (County Durham) displaying route number 5001, and It made me wonder how many bus routes around the country use four digit numbers? Three digits max has always seemed to be the common standard, since manual blind displays always had 3...

    Completely renumbered station platforms

Sunderland would have been renumbered in the early 2000s to accommodate the T&W Metro platforms.

    Bi directional platforms

Most stations between James Cook (Middlesbrough) and Whitby are bi-directional as the line is mostly a single track with a token system.

Stations with "platforms" which could in principle be used but (almost) never are

Does Margate Platform 2 get used very often? I only visit once a year but in all of the times I have used the station I have never seen any departures scheduled from platform 2.

Deltic (Class 55) query at terminuses

Something that has been bugging me about Deltics (and other loco hauled trains on the ECML for that matter). At London Kings Cross the platforms all end at buffers, meaning the locomotive would be 'trapped' by the coaches. My question is how did the trains 'turn around' to come back north? Was...

    Sunderland Station - Disused Platform

I remember this station being partially open air. There were three platforms but one was not used and was off limits. Work started in 2000 or 2001 to remodel it for the Tyne and Wear Metro which saw new shops built at street level which completely covered it over. On entering the station from...

Comedic "things you would ban": minor things that irritate you

I would just ban retail parks outright. The depress the life out of me! Put shops back on to the high street where they belong and bring our town centres back to life. I'd ban all TV shows which involve the combination of talent, judging and public votes.

Omicron variant and the measures implemented in response to it

Yes its just an automatic assumption I have made.

Omicron variant and the measures implemented in response to it

Also any restrictons which require businesses to close will also require the furlough scheme to be brought back.

Omicron variant and the measures implemented in response to it

So this announcement comes on a day where there are 39567 cases - 10.5K lower than yesterday. Hospital figures also still falling. I had been concerned the recent rise above 50k was this variant already spreading. Lets hope the 3 week is just to monitor figures, and measures are relaxed again...

Step 3 confirmed for 17th May

I'm no expert but if the Indian variant is much more transmissible, it would infect a lot more people at once, and therefore run out of people to infect much quicker. Would this not mean the spikes in cases will be rather short lived and we would reach herd immunity quicker? Moray is starting...

    Media Coverage of COVID -19

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/newsbeat-53736087 This was on the BBC earlier today. And yep you guessed it they suggest wearing a face covering.

    Media Coverage of COVID -19

I say good to all these people. It shows the government the general public are fed up of restrictions and won't put up with being told what to do anymore. And I don't see it extending the lockdown as it's less than 14 days until the next stage so too soon for any impact on the data.

New lockdown in England, including school closures, announced by Johnson, 4/1/21

I'm wondering who the 'Whitehall Source' is. For all we know it could be a cleaner who has overheard something. Or it could be someone over exaggerating on what has actually been discussed to get a more sensational story. Also until Autumn could be anytime between September and December.

New lockdown in England, including school closures, announced by Johnson, 4/1/21

I don't normally post here but jus want to get this off my chest. I had always found the discussions here reassuring but lately it's mostly predictions of doom and gloom. The news coming through today might be disheartening but its pure speculation and does mean it will be true. As the past...

    When will restrictions finally end?

What worries me is no matter what effect the vaccine rollout starts to have on the number of cases, hospital admissions and deaths over the next few months, we are still going to have all the 'Scientists' and 'Experts' from SAGE claiming not enough is being done to slow the spread. The current...

    Media Coverage of COVID -19

I wish they would stop this ritual of reporting the cases and deaths every teatime, especially when it's not a true representation of the past 24 hours. Just a weekly figure would be better in my opinion.

    Coronavirus words of the year

Draconian Cases Deaths Face coverings (the first two words I look for in any article about somewhere reopening)

    Media Coverage of COVID -19

Yes but it only ever seems to be experts who predict negative/gloomy scenarios. Never a report of an expert who says the virus will disappear in a few months.
