156s on far north line: timing vs 158s?

I've not seen a 156 that could accelerate faster than a 158 - unless the 158 had an engine out.

EMR Class 222’s - declining reliability

I meant not an issue with the Class 222 units that the poster used. Class 360 reliability is worth a thread of its own.

EMR Class 222’s - declining reliability

So it looks like your train to London 'caught up' the 1H22 Corby to St Pancras service in the Luton area that seemed to be suffering long dwell times and losing time there rather than not meeting the net running times. By the time the ex-Corby reached Harpenden, the on-time 9R21 Bedford to Three...

EMR Class 222’s - declining reliability

The Railway Performance Society conducted a timing exercise some months ago and concluded that the net station to station running times between Leicester and Sheffield / Nottingham demand absolute flat out driving and all engines running - which is rarely achieved in practice. A good Class 810...

Which particular services did you use?

EMR Class 222’s - declining reliability

Depends where they are losing time. If it is on clear track with no other services too close ahead and no temporary speed restrictions, it is likely to be traction issues - engines out etc. Otherwise it can be due to line congestion losing time behind other slower stopping services and freight...

    2026 Intercity Charters

The booking page suggested it was sold out, but would they really have booked every available seat?

EMR to introduce reduced Inter City service from Monday 20th July

Are there any stats to support the claim that the service was indeed stabilised?

EMR to introduce reduced Inter City service from Monday 20th July

No confirmation that the 221's are being drafted in. Sounds like the emphasis is changing the maintenance regime for the 222's to get them in better working order to support the core timetable - alongside trying to cure the Class 810 faults.

Chester and Liverpool trip to have MU speeds.

A survey of Avanti Northbound Liverpool services between Crewe and Weaver towards Lime Street for Sunday 2nd July has revealed - apart from a third of services cancelled - that only 50% of the 807's ran at the 125/120MU limits. It doesn't seem to be unit specific, as 807006 made two runs, one at...

EMR Class 222’s - declining reliability

I was just looking at some older emails from a retired driver who worked both 221's and 390's. He said is was common for the 221's to come out of the depot on only four engines. On routes such as North Wales coast, it was not an issue on dry rails as the 221's could keep time on four out of five...

EMR Class 222’s - declining reliability

It doesn't seem uncommon to see an XC set on one engine or a double set consist with one set on an engine out. The evidence collected on EMR runs suggests later and harder braking for stops to recoup time lost with slower acceleration.

Class 810 for East Midlands Railway Construction/Introduction Updates

Even more confused at the poor Class 810 diesel performance after sampling Avanti's 805's on diesel. It seems the Avanti sets with the slightly more powerful engines - as fitted to the 810's - are a step up over the existing class 802's with 100mph reached in well under four minutes and only...

EMR Class 222’s - declining reliability

Only four of six engines appear to be providing traction power. Was 18 mins late at Greenfaulds before it's last stop at Stirling. Now 8 mins down on its return journey and it hasn't even reached Lockerbie yet. Fortunately quite a few minutes of pathing time towards the southern WCML.

222604 spotted leaving Crewe leading vehicle engine idling, vehicle 4 no sound. Losing time northbound.

Avanti 805's under the wires on WCML (Euston - LIverpool)

Today's 9:05 continued Runcorn to Liverpool Lime Street on diesel and didn't seem to run at MU speeds on diesel or electric either sticking to under 108-109mph max.

EMR Class 222’s - declining reliability

Yes but the 180s are notoriously unreliable. You'd be lucky to have two of four units available for traffic, and they frequently suffered transmission issues.

Transpennine Route Upgrade and Electrification updates

There's a cab ride video from York to Manchester on You Tube from July 2026. The video poster did a similar video in August 2025. Interesting to compare the two. Here is the link to the latest video

EMR Class 222’s - declining reliability

How does Hitachi's maintenance and repair planning regime compare to what is done elsewhere and what issues does this lead to? Would hiring in the 221's really be an issue for train crew? Are they that different? Would Class 221 reliability be great as seen by other types of unit struggling to...
