Lewes derailment - Thursday 13th August

There's nothing about early opening on the NR internal news.

Derailment at Wickford - Friday 14th August 2026

    Great. Thanks for confirming.

Derailment at Wickford - Friday 14th August 2026

An internal Network Rail video has stated that they are planning to re-open the railway through Wickford tomorrow (Wed 26th August). I can't find any external press releases to that effect but RTT does support that...

    Got it now - thanks.

Fire at Network Rail depot - Slough (12/08/26)

Ooh, good spot. Thank you. I've edited the thread title.

    DB Cargo UK being sold

The link is showing as broken now which is frustrating. I have not seen any mention of Acton freight yard yet - that's on a long term lease to DB cargo too, and is very busy.

Fire at Network Rail depot - Slough (12/08/26)

If you go along that route again, do get a photo of the aftermath - that would be quite interesting. Indeed - fire service seems to have done a fab job as they usually do. Kudos to them.

    HS2 Old Oak Common

First blockade is indeed Christmas 2029, second is several years later. Station opening wont be till mid 2030s. Part of the plan is that the tracks are moved Northwards in the first blockade, clearing space for the construction of the rest of the bridges and the Southernmost station platforms...

Fire at Network Rail depot - Slough (12/08/26)

Hi everyone, There was a fire last week in 'an industrial unit next to the railway' in Slough. That building was part of the Network Rail maintenance depot. Quite the blaze. There are plans being made for a complete new building no great surprise...

    Announcement: Railway Codes website

Thank you so much for your work and for running such a useful site. :)

    Security at Barrow Crossings

I work in the industry and can definitely say a new barrow crossing would be extremely unlikely to be approved - it's not really worth spending energy on this. It's just not something that is supported in the current railway risk hierarchy. It would also need to be gated and linked to the...

    Cambridge South new station opening

I live in Shelford and have changed at Cambridge South two days on my commute into London. Busy both days - plenty of people getting off and on. Given it's only a few days in I was quite surprised but it's looking to be well used already. As I am writing this whilst on a train to Cambridge...

    Cambridge South new station opening

ooh, that's a really good point and you are right - that will cause people to stumble. Worth mentioning to station staff and they will log it. If enough people log it they should try to do something about it. Not sure there's much I can do now.

    Cambridge South new station opening

Thank you. :) Indeed - The university was our stakeholder for that building.

    Cambridge South new station opening

Because we are a bit nuts, and because we felt we wanted to do our own little celebration for the opening, especially given how much I was involved but that I wasnt involved at the end, I present to you the Cambridge South birthday cake! (No you dont get a video of us singing happy birthday -...

Statistically is the UK railway network now less safe?

So the first question of course is to define "safe". Using only fatal crashes paints a very limited picture. In the industry we use something called the "Fatality Weighted Index", which equates a certain number of smaller incidents to one larger, a certain number of larger to one major etc...

    Cambridge South new station opening

Lol - That's a great sign! Well, it's such a good station it deserves it! There are no despatch staff - it's all DOO. There are no CD/RA facilities. All trains that will call there have on-board cameras etc so there is also no mirrors or DOO cameras etc on the station as they were not...

Query about the new OLE at Long Marston Rail Innovation Centre

I can't tell you much about it, but here's the photos I took whilst attending rail live last week so those that know more about OLE than I do can comment. The train depicted is the 'Hydroflex' Hydrogen demonstrator, which was doing trips round the test track (on OLE).

Heatwave 22-27 June - effect on the UK Railway

I'd assume they are primarily using the thermal imaging camera to see how hot things are getting. They will spot a failed air con system in a signalling equipment cabinet, an overheating OLE switch, a failing 3rd rail connector, power supplies running very hot etc - All things that are likely to...

Heatwave 22-27 June - effect on the UK Railway

I took my regular 720 from near Cambridge to Liverpool Street and back today. Held up absolutely fine - Train was comfortable (temperature wise at least!) both ways. Certainly a little warm, but perfectly acceptable.
