Remember though that the 2nd Generation DMU stock at that time was only funded by the government on a 2 for 3 basis - i.e. three vehicles had to be withdrawn for every two funded. The railway was seen as being in decline.
If I had set that question in an interview, I would expect the candidate to come back with something along the lines of going back to seek clarification about what they were being asked to do rather than just having a crack at it and doing something that was potentially incorrect.
Some of the...
I mentioned 4 coaches but only to give a vaguely equivalent number of passenger vehicles to the Class 230's as a comparison - i.e. 67+3Mk4+DVT - in my weight calc.
I stand corrected - I thought there were 3x 3.2L engines in the TfW 230's (in which case my maths would have worked!).
I take your point about it not being that simple, however I understand that the 67's are far heavier on fuel on the Marches run than Class 15x units, and the 230's are quoted...
Were they sniggering as they told you?
A class 67 has greater cubic capacity in a single cylinder than all the engines in a class 230 combined. The only way a 230 would use more fuel would be if the 67 was turned off and being hauled by it. Crazy assertation to make.
Can anyone recommend a good Cafe to get a full Scottish Breakfast at after arrival in Glasgow Central on the Lowlander? i.e. Lorne Sausage, Potato Farls etc. Thanks!
a) Ground conditions, as stated above
b) Pinned base portals have a large reduction in cross-track forces, which enable a foundation less effected by soil movement to be used. There are also even older designs that allow the foundation to move without affecting the mast position (they have a...
This - 100%
If your client chooses not to listen to what you are telling them there's nothing you can do!
A recent example of this was the Second Sight computer investigation into the Post Office's Horizon system - the consultants didn't say what the PO wanted to hear so they ignored them.
It's worth pointing out (before some posters start jumping on the consultant bashing train) that all of these reviews, studies etc are due to UK legislation - they're not just made up for fun.
Compliance with Environmental and Ecological regulations have definitely started to be tightened up in...
In that case the duty holder will be the highways authority which for for the non-trunk roads and footpath will be Shropshire Highways. Their website has a plethora of information regarding their inspection policies and response times etc...
I think the point I'm trying to make has been lost slightly.
If the crossings are disused, then there would not be any "maintenance or safety inspections" of the crossing equipment. They are disused. They don't need to be kept in working order.
There are plenty of examples of disused lines...
Seems to be covering for 150252 after a set swap at Cardiff Central. So not vice 756.

From what you have posted earlier you've ascertained that the railway is now owned by the local council. As the owner of the asset they will ultimately be responsible for its safety of members of the public who are on it. There is however no duty upon them to maintain the level crossings in...
As she arrived 71 minutes late at Swindon, and the next connecting train to Didcot would have caused even more delay, I would have thought absolutely! I have in the past claimed delay repay for a journey which I was unable to complete by train in similar circumstances.
She did complete the...
That was pretty much it. As people who know the route well will know, it's more than possible for a late running container train to be sent down the March line, which with the long block sections can cause significant delay. And the GA service on which I should have travelled doesn't seem to be...
