Most likely sound echoing along the rails, even on continuous welded rail you can hear the train passing over where the rails are joined as well as expansion joints of course and dont forgot points!

Mine must be made of something galactic as my 1020 recently dropped on its corner onto ballast from my pocket climbing into a loco, at that point I even thought f**k as that was the worst drop i've had of a phone but the only damage is literally a dent to the top left corner

You smashed a Lumia screen?! I've regularly dropped my phone, both my both previous Lumia 800 and current 1020 from various heights onto ballast, concrete etc and never had a problem!

Wait, with all this talk about electrical connections etc, does this mean you need one to get a brake release when coupling onto an electrically broken or dead unit or is an air connection sufficient?
