Diesel running under wires on the ECML north of York?

I seem to remember Roger Ford in Modern Railways about 10 years ago saying that the overhead line voltage north of Berwick could drop to values well below 25Kv, which was why the Marshall Meadows upgrade was needed. I was therefore surprised when it got "descoped", apparently after some...

Should we learn from countries like Italy who often put white paint on rails as white paint cools the rails?

I was puzzled to see some pointwork painted white in the depths of Edinburgh Waverley recently, in a location where the sun can't shine.

Shunter travelling north on the A1 today ?

Two of our volunteers saw a Shunter on the back of a lorry parked up in a layby on the A1 in Northumberland today, might have been a class 08, in black livery. Anyone know where it was going ?

    First class lounges for all

You can definitely use a first class interrail pass to access the lounge at King's Cross.

ECML major disruption | 91107 fails at Knebworth (25/04)

We travelled back from Montreux today on the last day of our FC interrail passes, hoping to catch the 17:03 to Alnmouth. The lack of information in the FC lounge and on the website was amazing. I only knew something was up when I overhead a train crew member telling one of the receptionists that...

    Train derailment near Córdoba, Spain

The latest date I saw was for the line to reopen at Adamuz on 7th Feb, but since then it has been suggested that the poor weather will delay it further. The latest landslide will not help.

    Train derailment near Córdoba, Spain

Sorry, no, it's not opened, we used the Rail Replacement Bus (RRB).

    Train derailment near Córdoba, Spain

Just a note to say that I have travelled this line three times in the last three years, most recently on Friday and today going to Madrid and back from Malaga, with the RRB in the middle. The journey has alway seemed pretty smooth and this time was no exception, we have never experienced any...

    Freight on the Railways

I volunteer for a heritage railway and we used to be able to buy used ballast (of variable quality) from our local NR depot. A year or so ago they emailed all their customers to say they would no longer sell it in that state as they were going to start cleaning it for reuse, either for...

    LNER disruption page

I noticed that today and thought I had done something wrong. I also wanted to book a northbound train from KGX on Saturday 25th October but they aren't on sale yet. But the calendar doesn't tell you this like it used to, the date is just unresponsive when you click it. In the past it woukd have...

No trains Edinburgh to Queen Street from 29th Jan to 1st Feb ?

Thanks for the information, that explains why there's no trains but there's still nothing about it on any of Scotrail's communication channels and it seems strange the situation changed overnight on Monday.

No trains Edinburgh to Queen Street from 29th Jan to 1st Feb ?

Yes, but the strange thing is that when I checked yesterday, everything appeared to be running as normal on the 30th. There's nothing in their engineering works calendar or twitter feed for that period.

No trains Edinburgh to Queen Street from 29th Jan to 1st Feb ?

I am trying to buy tickets from Alnmouth to Milngavie on 30 January. When I checked yesterday it gave me a route from Waverley to Queen Street, changing there to the Low Level. When I checked today the only route is via the Shotts line to Central. I checked RTT and there's no trains showing to...

Long or high railway bridges you can walk over

Sorry to be pedantic, but the Cawledge Viaduct in Northumberland isn't disused, it has both a Heritage Railway and a foot/cyclepath on it. You have kindly provided a link to the Aln Valley Railway website which has a drone video of a steam train on it !

Long or high railway bridges you can walk over

The only name I can find for it is Rowlands Gill viaduct I'm afraid. Growing up there in the 1970s I didn't have any curiosity about the names !

Long or high railway bridges you can walk over

There are actually four viaducts on the old line between Swalwell and Consett which passes through Rowlands Gill. Going west from the Nine Arches at Lockhaugh, there's a second over the river Derwent in the village of Rowlands Gill, then beyond Lintz Green station there's a short one over...

Long or high railway bridges you can walk over

The Cawledge Viaduct on the Aln Valley Railway between Alnmouth and Alnwick in Northumberland is 23 metres high and 123 long, and believed to be the world’s oldest masonry heritage railway viaduct. It has a foot/cyclepath down one side. More details...

    ECML flooding 18/11/22

Yes, hopefully. Not sure why they couldn't have turned back some services at Berwick if the problem is at Grantshouse.
