    24th August: Metroland

Exactly that. Edward Watkin chairman of the Metropolitan, Great Central and South Eastern Railways (in late Victorian times) had this dream of establishing a through route between Manchester, Sheffield, London and Paris and was instrumental in the first attempt to tunnel under the Channel. His...

There are copies of the DVD on Amazon. I still have a copy from many years ago. Great stuff - especially the bit on Watkins Folly...

Does this make Sunderland & Newcastle the North-North. We look down on those folks in Lancashire & Yorkshire that think they live in the North...

Metrocar updates and withdrawals - Tyne & Wear Metro

I saw them (41 & 50) going north at Seaburn this afternoon from the opposite platform - nearly brought a tear to my eyes. There were folks sitting in them, blissfully unaware of the significance...

to complete the saying, the MS & L was renamed the Great Central (alias Gone Completely)!

[Trivia] stations where two lines converge on a single station and then both branch off eachother towards different directions.

Harsh since the junction for the Carlisle line is only just the other side of the King Edward VII bridge...

"Trivia" Through stations with extremely few passenger trains which do not call

I suspect that the Chiltern services (or the Amersham Met ones) may not count at most of the stations you mention do not have platforms on the "fast" lines. Only Moor Park would count as it has 2 island platforms.

    Murray's ABC

David & Charles produced a reprint of the July 1923 ABC Guide (to complement their reproductions of various Bradshaws). I picked up my copy at a charity shop for £3.

    Northampton-Market Harborough line

I travelled along the Northampton to Market Harborough line in November 1969 on the "Hornet Express" special train for Watford fans to Hull. The routing was: Watford Junction, Northampton, Market Harborough, Leicester, Erewash Valley, Chesterfield, the "Old Road" to Rotherham Masborough...

    Carlisle shunt neck

I have a copy of the Ian Allan Pre-Grouping Railway Junctions Diagrams 1914 which has the Carlisle area on page 1 (this is maybe where the Wikipedia diagram comes from). It is worth its weight in gold for showing locations where lines and junctions seem illogical now but are due to subsequent...

    Darlington station expansion

Talking of use, I can remember (just) in 1969 sleeping in a DMU parked in platform 3 at round about 2 o'clock on a Saturday morning with a friend on the way to Middlesbrough for a football match. All was going well until he pulled out a package of pilchard sandwiches which had been fermenting in...

Saddest sight - The decline of Stockton station

A lot of that junction was for the electric multiple units from the north-east side of the station to diverge to South Shields (across the bridge) or to the coast at Whitley Bay. The area, where the electrified platforms were, is now a car park...so if you are an NER Electric fan, that is a sad...

Busiest piece of individual track in the the UK?

I suppose that this really requires a separate thread, but the Network Rail owned line between Pelaw and Sunderland sees possibly the most varied, not to say busy, trains on the track, being Tyne & Wear Metro, Northern DMUs, Grand Central (who layover at East Boldon loop), occasional LNER Azumas...

Saddest sight - The decline of Stockton station

Sadness is all relative I suppose. One could argue that the station at Sunderland exhibits a similar sadness. After all, what was once a 4 platform station in the open air is now a fairly depressing underground 2 platform effort. The two entrances at ground level give a stark and not...

    St Albans Abbey station

As an afterthought to this thread, one of my experiences of St Albans Abbey station was on the evening of February 19 1969. I and a few friends were trying to get back to Watford after the football match at Luton was abandoned because of falling snow. We caught the 321 bus from Luton which got...

    St Albans Abbey station

The only station that might just be visible from the MML is St Albans London Road (ex GNR/LNER) on the erstwhile St Albans Abbey to Hatfield branch (the other railway that had the Abbey station as its terminus). It was closed to passengers in 1951 and goods in 1968. The station building still...
