    long distance spotters

When I was 13 I used to go on spotting trips to Crewe. From east of Rochdale. Ok, not that far! But I was doing it by myself. A bus into Rochdale, then onto the legendary Trans-Lancs Express bus from Rochdale to Stockport, then onto a 304 to bounce my way to Crewe. I’d park myself on a BRUTE...

    Class 40 nostalgia to Stranraer

A few years back I read a splendid "I was there" nostalgia piece with a guy who rode a 40 from Doncaster to Leeds to Carlisle to Stranraer towards the end of the class in general use. I can't find it now - does anyone have a link? After Stranraer he rode the 40 back to Carlisle (via a reverse...

    Off Peak Return

Yet another example of the railway treating its customers as criminals. Buy a ticket. Which is valid. From them. Following the contracted national ticket conditions. And get told by multiple people on multiple teams that the ticket isn’t valid and neither are the contracted conditions. Someone...

I am horrified at how strict the rail operators are

No, the relevant point is that operators like Northern *seek criminal prosecution*. Whether it gets there or not doesn’t matter as much as the reality that Northern seek it. Again, this includes crimes such as being sold a ticket for a train where the railcard discount sold *by Northern* was...

I am horrified at how strict the rail operators are

This debate is somewhat bizarre. Surely the conviction barrier is obvious: Caught short-faring. With multiple repeated deliberate examples found on investigation? Prosecution. Caught using a ticket sold by the train company who caught them, where the railcard discount isn’t applicable for that...

I am horrified at how strict the rail operators are

I think there are two parts to the issue: 1) A ticketing system which a best is obtuse and difficult to navigate and at worst is deliberately complex and confusing with the intention that the passenger pays the most possible even if cheaper tickets exist, and 2) An “our passengers are...

    My battle with MerseyRail

The rejection letter states that Trainline tickets can be collected from the machine at Ellesmere Port. Not so states National Rail: https://www.nationalrail.co.uk/stations/ellesmere-port/

WCRC loses judicial review in High Court

The key question about the coffin stock now being used will be whether punters are happy riding a steam train which they can't hear from their seat. Aircon means no open windows means minimal chuff chuff chuff sounds - isn't that a key part of what they want? As a DMU deviant I would much...

    Redouble Aberdeen-Keith Junction?

Related to this project is the growing campaign to reopen the railway to Fraserburgh and Peterhead. Additional capacity is needed immediately north of Aberdeen station and there are a couple of options to be able to add a 2nd track in through the tunnels.

ECML disruption due to OLE issues (01/12)

Are 802s capable of extended runs on the single diesel engine? How big is the fuel tank?

ECML disruption due to OLE issues (01/12)

So if I am reading this right, Kings Cross was shut as normal overnight. Despite 5 heavily delayed trains arriving into it. Multiple sources (with pictures) reporting being locked into the station on arrival. Then thrown out by security to find nothing available. No taxis, no staff etc.

ECML disruption due to OLE issues (01/12)

Some horrifying stories on Twitter. Haven’t heard from my boss but at least his train made it to York - at 03:27. One of the southbound trains was terminated at Retford gone 1am. Into sub-zero temperatures where they had to wait for (reportedly) half an hour for the train behind. As everything...

Confirmed : HS2 West Midlands-Manchester line to be scrapped and replaced with other projects.

The remaining elephant is Euston. This only gets built with private sector money, so lets expect that to be massively paired back as well. I don't think 400m trains are on the agenda any more...

London to Aberdeen to London in one day

I fly Aberdeen to London a lot - the rail option is too slow and too expensive. Someone questioned a London - Dyce single and then fly back. Book to Aberdeen and get the bus from there - much quicker than the non-interchange at Dyce.

    SVR Starting Short query

Fair enough. The difference in cost between Off Peak and Any Time Returns is ludicrous. I suspect because the SOR has 5 days validity for the outbound.

    SVR Starting Short query

A little while since I have done something like this, so thought I would ask the assembled experts. High flight costs make flying to Manchester way cheaper than Birmingham for a show I am going to at the NEC. MIA to BHI tickets are valid via MAN, and I'd be landing at 07:55. A Manchester...
