I'm not sure. The Ships of CalMac website just says "these are no longer available for passengers", but it must be getting on for 30 years since they were used by passengers.

There's no need to book in advance, as you can buy the tickets on the day. I'd definitely go if the weather is cold and clear, as the views from the ferries will be great. I'd be out on the top deck the whole time, but you can always go inside and look out of the windows if it's too cold...

If planning to change at International, keep an eye on the inbound working of the TfW train. If it's running very late, they may turn it round at New Street instead of International.

It's never quiet when I travel on it! Usually very busy between Temple Meads and Clifton Down. Wrexham would be a good example if you just consider the line to Bidston, with General being the main station and Central the quiet terminus.
