    GWR welfare marshalls

A decade or so ago (mid 2010s) Slough (and other stations along the PAD-RDG route) were a hot spot for fatalities. From memory there were local issues within some south east asian communities that led to a lot of the incidents at Slough and nearby. I know the NR worked with a number of local...

Ely area capacity enhancement (EACE) and possible service pattern

Pre-Covid around half of the services were 2 car. Since then 170518-523 have been extended to 3 cars, and now all Stansted services are booked 3 cars. Additionally, there is still 1 round trip missing (0922 ex BHM, 1327 ex SSD), and only around half continue through to Stansted, the rest are...

Ely area capacity enhancement (EACE) and possible service pattern

Off topic but the layout (with a couple of errors) is shown on traksy, though as there are no data feeds for the line, no train movements are shown. https://traksy.uk/live/M+23+PBRO+-14/M+19+STNEOTS+115/M+44+MRCH+11

Did 2-car 170s really run on the Midland Mainline?

Matlock came a timetable or two later. 0730 ex STP on Saturdays and an afternoon return. Can't remember whether the set ran ecs or passenger to Derby in between.

Did 2-car 170s really run on the Midland Mainline?

MML initially ordered 13 x 2 car 170s, quickly increased to 17 x 2 cars. 10 x center cars where then subsequently added, and finally 170397/8 were added before they went to Central Trains. Central Trains' 170503 was also hired to MML for a while. The 2 car MML 170s seated 121 (24 1st / 97...

Should all XC services call at Cambridge North?

Given the current comparatively poor service from the Peterborough/March line* compared to the Lynn and Norwich lines there is potential for a fair bit of growth should the line get a better/more frequent service. The service has yet to return to hourly (currently 1 round trip missing). There is...

Should all XC services call at Cambridge North?

The only regular overcrowding of the current XC services in Anglia is on the northbound between Cambridge and Ely. This is due to the existing timetable having a 25 minute gap before the XC service to Ely. After Ely, even peak services like the 1700 ex Cambridge have empty seats. In the...

Could Felixstowe container trains be routed via London to avoid the Ely bottleneck?

Max 75mph, 40 mph through March, and a few sections of "SP" and passenger/freight differentials, like the 75/60mph over Welney Washes (which currently has an ESR of 75/30). The line is a mixture of AB &TCB signalling which also restricts capacity. Additional, the liners are too long to be...

    December 2025 East Coast Timetable

With the retiming of the KGX-KLN trains to leave Cambridge at xx45, this should (hopefully) reduce overcrowding between CBG and ELY on the following xx00 XC services. Currently there is a 25 minute gap between 8 car GN service and the 3 car XC service.

    Intercity 225 to Newcastle?

There was some speculation about Newcastle seeing some 91/Mk4 on services during the upcoming engineering work that will see access to Neville Hill restricted/no access for a couple of months (16 weeks?). Not sure of the exact dates or whether there is any substance to the speculation.

[Trivia] Which railway services are crewed from depots at just one end of the line?

As others have posted, they are crewed by Cambridge, Leicester, and Birmingham. Only Cambridge sign the whole route, Leicester don't sign east of Leicester, and Birmingham don't sign south of Cambridge.

    December 2024 timetable change

Out of interest what changes were being planned for the local services? The obvious one being making the Ipswich-Peterborough service hourly but that seems highly unlikely given the lack of progress around the Ely Area Capacity Enhancement.
