I'm a bit confused by it - Chiltern saying 'do not travel' but still showing special 'Harry Styles' timetable. I would have assumed that the reduced timetable would have meant longer trains. And further assumed that perhaps trains timetabled to run slower to reduce impact on infrastructure, but...

Totally agree - basically saying we don't trust our catering staff.

That's the point - they don't close 'for a few minutes' do they. When I was going from Banbury to Derby and back regularly a few years back, they would close the shop just after leaving Derby, and it wouldn't be open much before Banbury.

TBH I don't know - I've never done that. But I have been at the station, buying a ticket 10 minutes before the train arrives and offered reservations. I assume if I booked a ticket online on the day I would still be offered a reservation? Perhaps I'm behind the times again :D.

Big issue for me with XC is last minute reservations. So you can on a train and sit in an unreserved seat, only to find someone has booked along the way. Mind you, seat reservations on XC are chaotic anyway.

This one does my head in, and indeed outside lane hoggers. My son lives in Essex which requires regular trips on the M40/M25. The M25 is bar far the worst. Trying to obey the rules is almost impossible with cars pottering along in lane 2 or 3. And you see cars join the motorway and...

I noticed coming into Snow Hill this morning that hoarding is being put up to cover the Platform 4 works, with 'Midlands Rail Hub' branding on it.

So, as alluded to in a previous post, if the guard thought the driver was going too fast, they'd apply the brake?

How did the operation of the brake van work in practice? Did the guards have to continually monitor speed etc and brake accordingly? How did they know the speed, and hence when to apply the brake?

From experience, there are many times where I've been on a lightly loaded XC train (it does happen!) where they still don't push the trolleys through. Totally get it on a busy train.

Interesting though. I use a Chiltern Smartcard for my regular commute which is rarely checked when a ticket inspection is taking place. They happily scan e-tickets - I think it may be a different app to scan a Smartcard?
