A similar thing happened to me. I was travelling from Wombwell to Leeds. The first train was cancelled and the second train was full (Barnsley were playing at home). I emailed Northern at enquiries@northernrailway.co.uk and they paid me the full price of my ticket.

I used one of my codes yesterday on 3 different Northern services (all after 9.30) and no conductor (nor the gateline at Leeds) batted an eyelid.
